First-I need to vent about the elevators at the Contemporary. About the size of a small closet, they are never all working at once and seem to run as slow as syrup on a cold morning. They can probably hold 8 people each--add a stroller and perhaps some luggage and it's even less. On this trip we were the only group in the lobby waiting for the "up" elevator. By the time one showed up, there were about 20 people waiting!! We six packed ourselves in and then a family of 4 tried to get in. The 2 kids made it--but not the parents!!
On the way out of the CG after dinner, there were so many folks waiting for the "down" elevators that a CM was assigned to superrvise the loading when one arrived!!

OK. That's out of my system. Something that needs to be put up with when trying to get to the 15th floor.

Now dinner. The 2 couples we were with had been to Broadway at the Top, but never to CG. They were amazed at the change when we got to the restaurant. Our PS was for 7:45 PM and tho the place was quite full, we were seated immediately. (I should note that when I made my PS, I had to get a table for 4 and a table for 2. All tables for 6 were booked. So I wondered how that would be handled at the restaurant. But no problem--we all sat at a table for 6).

The Grill was it's usual noisy self this evening. Lots of kids and all manner of dress--jackets, dresses, shorts, T-shirts, tennis shoes, etc. The entire right-hand side of the restaurant was closed off due to a "private party" and that meant the observation deck was closed too. But not a problem! They have another door to a different ramp on the other side of the restaurant, and that was opened for fireworks viewing.
Our group ordered drinks first and most got a glass of wine from the excellent wine list (where they will pour a glass from almost ANY bottle and charge 1/4 the bottle price). I opted for a beer. They do have Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada Pale, but this nite they also had Kirin, so that's what I got.
Our group split 3 appetizers--two Beefsteak tomato salads, and the chicken, fontina and carmalized onion flatbread. The group went entirely with meat for our entrees--4 Filets, and two porkloin. They do have polenta and two different potatoes that are listed for each entree--but they will gladly substitute. My pork came with polenta--but I wanted the scalloped potatoes instead, and thats' what I got. No problem at all.
Mrs U's favorite CG dessert (blueberry cake with blueberry Ice Cream ) was missing from the dessert menu, so she opted for the Butterscotch Creme Brulee. That' what I got also and it was pretty good.
The fireworks commenced while were having dessert, so we all just got up and went out on the deck. Afterwards, we came back and finished dessert and coffee.
Service by the way, was excellent from our "energetic" but friendly server.

So all in all another fine meal at the CG. I've done the Grill for our first nite dinner now the last 3 trips in a row. So next trip we'll probably skip the CG and try something different. But for anyone who has never been (or hasn't been in awhile). it is the perfect spot for that "first night" dinner at WDW.

Thanks for the report uncleromulus!

I have made ressies for CG for our trip in January and was trying to gage it so we would be there for the fireworks, but it's tough since they haven't posted those times yet. I made one ressie under my name for Friday, I might make a second under DBF's name for Saturday since I'm not sure if Fantasy in the Sky will be held on Friday (it might only be Saturday in January)

I was also concerned that we would have to wait for a table near the window to see the fireworks. I did not realize there is a viewing area, so it sounds like lots of people get up from their tables, view the fireworks and then return to their tables?

So would you say that a table by the window is a nice to have, but not a need to have?

Any tips/advice that you think would be helpful are appreciated.

Thanks!

Annie T.

That's well put--nice to have, but not an absolute must. In actuality, lots of folks just get up and walk over to the window table area. They then crowd around those who actually have window tables. Bad form, I think. And it's not at all hard to walk onto the ramp veiwing areas.
Window tables go fast, and there aren't that many. And those who have them tend to "linger" over dinner--if you know what I mean.

thanks for the review, it just confirmed my thought that teh CG can wait, :) last time we were there was in '98, and we arent running back!

Laura :) :) :)

Uncleromulus-

Thanks so much for posting your CG review! I was hoping that you would post a review of this restaurant!! :)

My boyfriend and I are headed to the CG for our first night in WDW. I made PS arrangements for the fireworks, but I'm glad to hear that you do not have to have a table at the window to enjoy the show. One question though- How would you describe Kirin beer? I know that it's a Japanese beer, but I've never actually tried it.

Ahh, yes, we are going to CG for our first night's dinner, also. We appreciate seeing your review. After that we'll be grazing at the FWF, but this will be a wonderful way to begin our 5 days.

I'd describe Kirin as somewhat light and smooth. Not at all heavily hopped, or bitter (like Sam Adams). It's not actually a lite beer per se, but goes down like one. You won't confuse it with stuff like Bud or Coors either--it's much better than those.
Hope you like the CG!!

Thanks for the review. I also will be going to the CG for our first night in Disney. :p!!! 47 days and counting!

Thanks for the review! I'm yet another person who spends the first night at the CG. The Butterscotch Creme Brulee is one of my favorites. Hope it is still there in December! Can't wait to read the rest of your reviews! :)

Thanks, Uncleromulus, for the description. I think I'll give it a try if it's still available when we go. I cannot stand beer that is heavily hopped. I prefer something that tastes like liquid bread. Kirin doesn't sound like it fits the description of "liquid bread," but it still sounds yummy.
