First House... Things you never thought you would ever need.

Night lights.
At least until you get used to the lay-out. I know I stubbed my toe a time or two.:headache:

I wish I could do that in my garage Lisa_loves_Pooh! But when the snow melts off my car it melts in the garage and it makes a mess! GROSS! I can't keep anything that doesn't belong outside in my garage! :(

Thanks for posting this Meg!! As you know, we are closing on our first house in 8 days!! Just completed the last of the closing papers and homeowners insurance an hour ago!

Our house is older, 35 years, but also newly remodeled. Not so much that the stickers are on things but within the last 2 years. We do need to paint though ... who paints an entire bedroom, molding and all, mint green!

My list currently include:
Smoke/Carbon Monoxide dectectors (currently only have smoke)
Fire Extinguisher
New Deadbolt/Front door knob. Our new house is out in the country and seriously, the front door only has a lock equal to a bedroom door!! I'll be taking my parents old one for now since they can get expensive.

Um, that's it!! Though I do need to check into that thingy to unlock those doors. My 2.5 year old likes to lock himself in his room. Right now it's a push lock so that's easy enough to undo but what about the turn locks. He knows how to lock those too.

A list of emergency services laminated and put up on the fridge.

Include:

Nearest ER (directions if you don't know the area well) and phone number
Nearest Urgent Care and Phone Number
Doctor Phone Number
Poison Center
Police non-Emergency number
Phone number of emergency contacts (for example, my husband's parents numbers and their neighbor's number)
Vet numbers (if you have pets)

I'd HATE to have to look for any of this information when I needed it most.

Depending on the size of your house, you will want more than one fire extinguisher. We have one in the kitchen, one in the laundry room (lots of home fires start there, with the dryer) and one in the family room.

Also, it's good to make a list of all your utilities and their contact numbers, in case the power goes out, or there's a gas leak or whatever. Keep that in the 3 ring binder someone else has mentioned. :thumbsup2

Other things, to get sooner or later:

light bulbs
office-type supplies - stapler, stamps, sissors
garden hose
trash cans
candles
matches/lighter (for candlelight dinner to celebrate moving in! Or for when the power goes out...although a flashlight is better/safer for the latter)

And having just come from the disaster thread, find the place you need to get inside your new home to be safe in the event of a storm. :goodvibes
