Question for you guys. What did you get your son when he made his first holy communion. I don't know what to get him. When my oldest daughter made hers a few years ago we got her a chain and cross and we had a small party for her.

My children, both daughter and son received the same thing, gold chain and cross. I don't see the gender difference?

We went out for dinner as a family after for each child

he will not wear the chain

I appreciate medals/crucifixes but I just don't like anything around my neck. I wish I could wear a scapular but I can't for the same reason. I enjoyed Lives of the Saints or a small statue of Our Lord or Blessed Mother or my patron saint. What I remember most is dinner with my family after the Mass.

A rosary bracelet, it's made out of olive wood from the Holy Land and petrified wood and looks like a pretty normal masculine bracelet that any boy might wear. And the Catholic book of prayers.

Kids should get presents for making their communion?

Not in my house. So, I guess, nothing. I did take him to get a haircut the day before, though, and bought him a new pair of dress pants since he had outgrown his. That's it. It never occurred to me that making your communion was a gifting occassion.

To each their own. I'm sure everyone does it differently. Nothing wrong with it.

We gave DS a party. He has a winter birthday, and had always been bummed that he couldn't have a bouncy house like some of his friends, so we got one for his First Communion party instead. Parties and gifts are very common in our area.

My girls got crucifixes to hang in their rooms, rosaries and prayer books. All things that would help their spiritual journey.

Don't you have a religious gift shop near you? Go in and find something to commemorate the occasion, maybe a small Jesus statue, a nice keepsake bible, something along that line.

First Communion is not a big gift giving occasion here, but it certainly gets commemorated.

Really? It's a sacrament, and those are usually celebrated big here, with most giving checks or bonds. Baptism, Communion, Confirmation, Marriage. We don't have a lot of local family, so we usually just go out to a restaurant, but we are not the norm. First Communion season is almost here!

OP, I gave my kids namesake Saint medals. Ds17 didn't wear it then, but wears it now.

Dolla' dolla' bills, y'all! At least that's what I received. Although to be honest, that might have been for Confirmation, not First Holy Communion. I don't remember.

My children were raised American Baptist and were given gifts when they were baptized. My daughter was given a jewelry case engraved with her Bible verse. My son was given a wallet with his Bible verse.

Money.

He also got a lego rosary from his godparents that was pretty cool.

But, the majority of gifts were money.

If he won't wear a chain, what about a small pocket cross? We got my son one that is granite, about an inch and a half long, and he carries it in his pocket for church and prayer time.

I also remember getting a First Communion greeting card with a holy card which said "Remembrance of My First Holy Communion" and my parents wrote the date on it. I still have it to this day (almost 50 years later!) in my prayer book. You also get a certificate from the parish/church where the ceremony takes place.

My Mom gave my son a gold cross and chain, so we got him a gold cross lapel pin.
