I am looking for advise on taking great shots for my nephew's first hair cut. I would love something a little different than just the normal sitting in the chair, which I will get as well. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please post:thumbsup2.

I'd say to try and really chronicle the whole experience. Capture his expressions before he leaves the house. If he has to sit and wait; get his nervousness (or excitement). Of course, he normal chair shots. Then a low angle shot of just the hair on the floor. And then the "see, it wasn't so bad" shot.

Also try to use angles to capture the atmosphere of the place. Like a shot of him waiting his turn, but you can see the other people waiting, or even just a line of empty chairs.

It wasn't my son's first haircut, but you are welcome to look at my zenfolio account and see if you get any ideas.

He went from surfer boy to clean-cut All-American: http://amyhenkel.zenfolio.com/p894464513
I would advise turning up the ISO and avoid using the flash. I really dislike flash reflections in the mirror :)

With my DD's first haircut, I got a few shots of the trimmings on the floor, as well as shots taken from behind her where I was able to focus on her face in the mirror as the lady cut her hair. I also got a shot of her ponytail lying on the counter.....but that's not a typical shot as I doubt most kids get their first haircut at age 7 and have an 12-inch ponytail cut off! lol (She wanted her hair to remain long, so she only cut off 12 inches (it was still down below her shoulders).....she donated the ponytail to Locks of Love.) :thumbsup2

Thank you that is such a great Idea! I think I am more nervous about these shots than just about anything.

I loved those pictures, what a transformation, if your going to do that Disney is the best place to do it. I did look at you zenfolio and your pictures were just great!

The shot of the hair on the groung is great. Camden is only 9 mos old and they are taking him to a family friend to get the haircut (so it won't have the cute little kid stuff) so I hope they have a great little kid cape! Thanks to everyone, and I will post the pictues tomorrrow!

Well one day I will learn:headache:. I had a list of shots that I wanted to get and ended up with none of them. First the sign to the salon was so old and run down that I didn't even take a picture of it. The second shot that I really wanted was the hair clippings falling to the floor or just even on the floor, but the stylist hadn't swept of the hair on the floor from what it looked like the last three customers:scared1:. So that shot was out :( Camden did really good, and I did get a couple of average shots, so here they are. Thanks again for all the great ideas.

Things hardly ever work out as planned, especially when venturing into the unknown. But very cute shots!!!!! Nice work!!!! :thumbsup2

Thanks SrisonS, I think I just want to capture the most of an event like this, and was just so disapointed . I'm sure their will be something else come along (like his 1st Birthday) to over plan for me at least:rotfl2:.

Just like with a trip to Disney, I approach anything like this with a list of shots I want to get. Typically the best ones are the happy accidents that occur along the way. :thumbsup2

That clipper shot is sure to be a family heirloom! :lmao:

Great job!! :thumbsup2

I really want to raise my kids again, but with a digital SLR!! Ok, just kidding about wanting to start over with my kids, but MAN I wish I had been digital!

You got the before and after shots, so that good...and I think you caught the "worry" in between, which is the best part! He's also a really cute kid with an adorable smile. You did good!

I think you are correct with the happy accidents, they are always the best. I hope that when I go to Disney in December I am not stressed out about getting the right shot:rotfl2:, not in the happiest place on Earth:rotfl:
