My daughter's boyfriend started a new job today teaching at a high school. He's only 23 and has never student taught (alternate route certification).

He was pretty nervous last night, but it sounds like his day went well (he was just very tired! ). He and DD went to the store tonight to get his poster board to post his classroom rules.

As of tomorrow, his class of ninth graders will be in alphabetical order! :rotfl2: In another class, he will be separating Romeo and Juliet. :rotfl:

I'd say he's picking things up pretty quickly! :lmao:

P.S. DH and I are both in education. We warned him before he started that he was about to learn how different things are from the other side of the desk! ;)

Congratulations to you! What subject are you student teaching?

In DD's BF's case, he'll be issued a teaching certificate through an alternate route program (thus no student teaching experience). He knows his subject area backwards and forwards and will do well, but I know how scary it can be walking into a classroom full of teenagers! ;) Fortunately, his largest class is 20 (I never had a class that small :upsidedow ).

Good luck with your student teaching and with your future professional opportunities!

Wow, especially having never student taught I would think that would be nerve wracking. I substituted for my boyfriend's mom when I was in college--she was at a Catholic school and they didn't have strict standards for a sub. I was soooo nervous the first day! IT all went quite well except that a family friend of ours was one of the students (his parents were friends with mine) and he knew I was only about 5 years older than him. That was weird!

He had another good day and really enjoyed himself (attended his first afterschool staff development session (now there's some fun for you ;) ). He said the lovebirds that he had to separate today just pathetically stared at each other from across the room (poor broken hearts :lmao: ).

He has some seniors that are probably only 5 or 6 years younger than him (kind of like with your situation).

What's really funny is that I remember how a couple of years ago he used to be absolutely positive that he did NOT want to teach school! :rotfl2:

When I was a senior in high school I had a sub that I had been friends with in another school district. Back then you only needed two years of college to sub. Some kids would sub. during May and June after their second year of college.

One day our sub walked into class. His name was Mr. D, but I knew him by his first name. He was only two years older than me and we had been in the drama club together. If memory serves me right, we even played spin the bottle together. I don't know who was more freaked out when he came into class, him or me.

Best of luck to him. In a few more years, he'll probably be telling himself he was right, he did NOT want to be a teacher! It's sure nothing like the sitcom classrooms on tv with 10-12 kids all nicely dressed, sitting quietly, listening intently, etc. I'm only in third grade, and I wouldn't want to attempt ninth. Anyway, from an old teacher to a young one, good luck!

Thanks, I'll give him your good wishes!

The majority of time that I was in the classroom I had Jr. High and High (mostly 7th-10th). Most of the time it was fine, but the older ones can have the potential to be more of a problem if they want to be. DH teaches 4th grade and absolutely loves it (that's what he's always had, even student taught in 4th). I don't think you could blow him out with dynamite! ;)
