So I just wanted to share this little bit of nerdyness with you. A report of the first day I stepped through the train station gates of the Original Park.
It had been 15 years since I was last in Disney World. 15 looong years. For 15 years I fought tooth and nail to get my parents to take me back but money was tight. Then came College and after all this time it dawned on me I could fly to California, which is a state I want to move to one day, btw, always dreamed about it.
So one long but interesting flight later There I stand in LAX with my friends not believing anything I was seeing was real. I mean like Palm trees? What are these things? These rare and mysterious plants!! And they are EVERYWHERE! I didn't even care that I was stuck in 2 hour traffic on the freeway there. We rolled down the windows and blasted the radio as I read all the LA signs I only saw in video games before.
We checked in to the Holiday Inn threw our stuff in the room left immediately and ran down Walnut until we saw THE California Screaming, Fun Wheel, and Tower of Terror for the first time without a computer screen separating us! I even like waved my arms around like ooo no screen (yeah everyone thought I was weird).
We were only supposed to go to DTD that day, but after doing a few things there seeing a movie and all we just kept looking at those ticket booths like starved wanderers at a fine steak dinner in a window. We had to ring that bell! So we sprung for an entire extra ticket each! The lines seemed long to get in but it was like two seconds! As the sun began to set I took my first steps beneath the plaque, and the first thing I did when entering the park? TRIP!! and fall! That's very me. Just OWW!!
After I dusted myself off, I knew which ride I wanted to do and no one was stopping me! Since Mr. Toad closed so very long ago, It was only fitting to head straight for it! The longest awaited ride. We headed down the beautifully lit Main Street, so clean and bright compared to any theme park I'd seen in the last 15 years. Castle was blocked for a show so sadly our first time did not include an iconic walk through the arch. Instead we turned and came face to face with the MASSIVE MATTERHORN. Now I've seen this puppy all over the internet but I seriously underestimated it's size. See for years my only theme park was Six Flags, and when they make a "Mountain" ride its a warehouse with some fake stones on the front. Not this baby! This was a true mountain! It was almost overwhelming!
MR TOAD'S WILD RIDE!!!
After I caught my breath we made a turn around a glowing Alice in Wonderland and I realized how intimate this park was compared to WDW's Magic Kingdom. It felt more like a theme park more full that is. Just like I'd read, DL apparently has more rides less space. Fantasyland's updated facades were even more detailed than I'd even realized with all my research. I didn't realize that entering MR. Toad would be like Entering Toad Hall! Chandeliers, book selves, not just a metal line and paintings. Once again I sat at the wheel and tried to mimic the cars movements just as I'd did years ago. Winding through scenes both familiar and new.
After that nostalgic jolly drive, I ended up in H E double hockey sticks, as I knew already, but seeing the little devils in there somehow reminded me of the end of splash mountain, so I decided we'd head for the bigger rides......yes I was in charge.....I have a Mohawk, that's sorta like having a crown so IM the princess here! -hands on hips-
So we headed in the general Splash Mountain-y direction. Suddenly to my surprise Pinocchio's scenery became a bit....Miney..... and without warning the roar of a runaway train. There it was! Thunder Mountain right next to Fantasyland! Interesting but the way it blended was...uncanny. It's like the mines of old Germanic tales become the ole west. Hey, after all Grumpy has an old western prospector accent so It's worked before! But Looking over this ride now, it's detail just kinda makes me happy. It doesn't "look fake" like six flags. It woulda been so great to hop on the ride again but alas....we were all still carrying backpacks since we dashed out of the hotel and knew we'd buy gifts. Now before you say anything.....I had NO!!! Idea that they had pouches to place bags. As far as I remembered WDW did not have those back in the 90s. So off we went.
We had absolutely no idea where we were headed but we sorta had this "tour of the park" idea in our heads.......so we wound up in Adventureland!
ENCHANTED TIKI ROOM!
Suddenly we all for no reason had the urge to go see the Tiki Birds, the original show again, which we'd not seen since that Iago one came to MK (I know it's different now but that was a LONG time ago....2000 to be exact on my last trip Millennium village!! Represent!!) Anyhow, This big line formed next to what looked like the top of the Tiki Room (and it was) I asked a lady "Is this the line for the tiki room? Nope this was the line for DOLE WHIP!! wow! I'd never had it before in my life but that was a long line, so I'd not have it that night (later I saw why that line was so long!! mmmmmm) I had a LOT of trouble trying to lead my pack to the entrance. as the "expert" in the group I'd really misplaced it. Turned out to my surprise the entrance is on the other side of the Adventureland sign.....and doesn't that technically make it in Main Street? Lets not think too hard on that!
Only reason I found it was I heard the tiki rhythm that I knew from grainy old vhs home videos. We missed the garden show but walked right in. The second we walked in we headed for third row seats, good place between the birds, flowers, and not soo close you gotta look dead up...I ain't that tall people! Amazing show, as I remembered. Though this show used to scare the hoo hah outta me as a kid what with all the singing odd looking totems and drummers with horns. It was kinda interesting to note that I know the show word for word from Mp3s in my car on the way to work each day. But the smell of every ride being memorized....now that's dedication right there!! Tiki Room, Haunted Mansion, and Mr. Toad smell similar. So the next destination subconsciously was Haunted Mansion.
HAUNTED MANSION!
The Queue of the HM in this place is.....actually really cool. It looks like an ordinary house. Like you're walking up on some guy's porch and he about to come out and say "NASTY KIDS!! GET OFF MY LAWN!!" I heard puffing of trains go by behind us, and I saw a crypt open up to reveal several people and a cast member out of the blue. That was cool. Even exits like that were themed!
What was annoying to me was... at least 8 people were mouthing the spiel from the elevator stretching room word for word. Literally. I was about to be like SHUT UP!! Stop ruining the experience for new people! If you go into a Haunted house with a creepy talkin' disembodied dude saying stuff to freak you out, your companions are not gonna know what he's gonna say before he says it.........well unless it's one of those body possession thingies. But I digress.
I was very surprised to note that...I believe....there is a scene in the windows of the gallery hall. It looks 3-D not just a picture or fake light. Yet they are covered by blowing curtains! Now THAT is detail! Game set Match SF Great Adventure's Houdini ride! I plopped myself down in the doom buggy next to Emily, and we became those annoying college girls getting giddy at everything all of a sudden. Every scene was like OMG I REMEMBER THIS OMG I REMEMBER THIS OMG ITS THIS GUY!! IT was AWESOME! And I even discovered a secret little garage door in the attic!! hmmmmmm.....(I believe this is probably some maintenance shed or vehicle repair garage). One creepy laughing hallway moving floor ride later..... We exited the mansion....and what exactly does one do in DL once they leave the haunted mansion.....? I don't rightly know. What I do know is I always coupled HM with POTC even before I knew they were built side by side at the same time over here. Both Dark, both surrounded by silly but scary people, etc.
Into the windy Nawlin's we go. We twisted around that place forever until we found the entrance to the ride is near fantasmic's area, which btw was getting PRETTY full around this time! That turn by Tarzan's Tree however is brutal.....It's like HOW MUCH LONGER OMGGGG!! Someone knocked on one of the doors from the inside of the queue so we knocked back and we occupied our time knocking on the door until my friend Emily said "WELL SOMEONE'S GOTTA ANSWER THAT!! OR WELL GET NOWHERE!!" Which cracked me up. But anyways, Entering the very candlelit looking entrance smelling the smell of southern Cajun cooking and such, and reading the paintings.....of what we thought was Gibbs's father.....We plopped into the boat. Now it was about this time that I started to get that annoying feeling where I think this is one of my countless Disneyland Dreams (tm) and any minute I'd wake up in my lumpy bed back home and go AWW MAN!! but I had to shake that off! Past Banjo man and down to the FREEZING CAVES HOLY BALONEY!! How is that crab not cold??? HOW CAN HE LIVE DOWN THERE!!???
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN!!
I thought the begining scene was totally cool! I liked the bar especially like a secret stop off point for rowboats from ships. That's a cool effect....the stow your weapons especially was a nice touch. REALLY GREAT ride....but I felt Jack and co were a bit out of place. I mean the ride told a great story as it was...back in time you go.....seeing the dead pirates then whisp!!! you're back to when they lived...seeing their gluttony misogyny and thievery, you watch as they lose control of their lives and shoot out drunkenly in a place fulla explosives you only escape their fate by getting pulled up the waterfalls of time back to the present! But hey! It was good to see those guys I like em!
STAR TOURS!!
How we ended up in Tomorrowland I will NEVER know! The place suddenly became a zoo once we got out of pieces of eight. areas blocked off people running about willy nilly and such! What was going on!!!?? WE followed the herd around Fantasyland to Tomorrowland where I passed those Mine seagulls which made me laugh. But there I decided, well Can't do coasters with this bag (false) So lets do something almost like a coaster.
The "brand new" (to me) Star Tours was a fresh new ride to me. I'd avoided Youtube videos to not spoil it. I got so excited by the time I passed the G2 Droids that I almost walked on without glasses and then Hayley had to go back and jam some on my head!!! Nearly poking me eye out she did! I sat in the ride.....my feet actually reached the floor!! It's so different when you're this age! everything fits better for some reason but also seems smaller but also bigger......I'm rambling again aren't I? ANYWHO, The ride was hilarious from start to finish, had us laughing out loud like nuts! By the end of it we were giggling like cheerleaders and we just had to do it ONCE MORE!! And then we got churros and sat down until the crowds dispersed.
Once the red sea of people had parted, we made a dash across the entire park from the tomorowland stage where someone was playing uptown funk, ALLLLLLL THE WAY to.......
SPLASH MOUNTAIN!!!
AS soon as we got to the front of the line we asked the CM if there was any lockers or anything because we were tired of avoiding rides because of our baggage, that's when we learned WOOPS! We can carry that stuff on rides (SAY WHAT!!?)
So here we go up to the ole cabin with the farming tools just like in Florida! Some kid dropped his toy off the top and some teens were all laughing for some mean reason. The area made me think how much better it looks than Six Flag's log flume barn fulla farming tools which had no walls. Thats when it hit me....I was making comparisons to a park that is probably so far away to anyone here that they wouldn't even picture going there..... 2000 miles from my house, and I still kept thinking any moment I'd bump into someone I knew or turn the corner and realize I was really walking down my block day dreaming....I hate when I get like that...It makes me question myself too much....
So we walk down the pathway I nearly knock a lantern into the water (GEEZ!! IM A Klutz!! I'm sorry!! I was so embarrassed!!) And we sat down in the log and.....WHAT IN THE WORLD?? OWWWWWWWWW
Why!!? WHY MUST YOU BETRAY ME FAVORITE DISNEY RIDE!!? WHYYY!!? The seats were so hard as well....a log!! It felt like sitting on a log at a camp fire! I wondered how I'd be able to endure it the whole ride! I swear WDW did not have such seats! But I toughed it! I'm a big girl! This ride was a lot quicker paced than the one in Florida. I barely had time to see each scene! But It was still really cool! I had a dream of the ride just two days prior and it looked exactly spot on....cept I fell out next to brer bear in his trap...which obviously didn't happen. But continuing on....There was that one extra song at the end too which was cool! MAN I JUST LOVE THIS RIDE! I mean really! I grew up with my dad reading me these stories, we had a Disney's SOTS. storybook, a collection of tales from the Money Jingler to the tar baby and beyond! If you don't know these stories you're probably like Erica what are you talking about! But Seriously you should TOTALLY try and find them somewhere. WELL WORTH IT! But prob wont be as cool as when my dad tried to do the accent lol!!
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
So it was right there, no wait! In we go! Apparently a little known fact about Tiggers is that safety is what they like best! Who'da thought? The ride was much like in WDW but I finally learned that that tooting noise in the Heffalumps scene was not the Mark Twain as I'd thought from videos (and its proximity to the river). I'd questioned that for many years. I also got a glance and yes the three talking heads from CBJ were still up there!
I'm not sure what we did after that since this was August 2015 and that was nearly a year ago, but! I know I probably went on star tours a few more times. Then I made Pinocchio Dance on main street!
The trip in total was totally great! but! I injured myself somehow later on and was unable to walk right for the last 3 days. I needed a wheelchair the last day because my ankles swelled so badly for some reason. But No way was I leaving! I wanted every LAST SECOND in the park!!
So what do you think guys.....are you still awake? Sorry It's so long but I like writing with embelishment and putting my personality into things.... You'll get used to me
But I'd LOVE to hear what you guys think!! Anything similar happen during your first time? Did I make you laugh? Did I totally annoy you? Do you now think I'm just an annoying dorky brat with strange hair? (mean!)
I'm glad I got to share this with you guys! I'll post my DCA one when I'm not tired
