First Cruise on Disney Dream Question

I am a first time cruiser and our cruise is on Memorial Day 2016. I was wondering if they do anything special or different since we leave on Memorial Day? Also do they sell Memorial Day pins or anything like that? Thanks!

We sailed on the Magic two years ago on Memorial Day and there was nothing special done aboard ship.

I put together a special lanyard of "patriotic" pins that I wore that day, but I got the distinct feeling that most people didn't even know (or care) it was Memorial Day.

You've got to remember that there are a number of cruisers onboard that are not US citizens. It's just another day to them. And many younger US citizens aren't really aware of what the day symbolizes.

My children definitely know what Memorial Day signifies. It's a shame and disgrace if you or your children do not know! These people gave their lives protecting our freedoms. The LEAST we can do is honor and remember them one day a year!

I never said my children don't know. We're a military family (brothers, sisters, nephews, in-laws, fathers all in the military). I just said that many younger people don't.

A lot of people plan their vacations around a holiday because it's a paid day off and it doesn't count toward their allotted number of days of annual leave. So they're "observing" it, just oblivious to the significance. Sort of like the malls having big sales on Memorial Day weekend -- nothing says patriotism like shopping at _____ (insert your favorite department store here.)

Wasn't saying you in particular. Just saying Americans in general. I think it's a shame that our youth AND some adults have no clue and just take our freedom for granted! And I also hate that they "OBSERVE" it with a shopping day! I was wondering if they sold the memorial day pins on the ship. I would really like to get one.

We sailed a couple of times on Memorial Day. Christiaan was the cruise director each time and he gave a wonderful speech honoring the men and woman of the military. He even asked all of the current, veterans and retired military members to stand and accept our appreciation. It was very nice.
