I am invited to a First Communion party. The little girl is my very good friend's granddaughter. I haven't been to a Communion party in many years. I really can't remember the last time. What is the appropriate gift? Not the amount, but do I buy a gift, give cash, gift card? If I buy a gift, does it have to be something religious, like a cross necklace? I am a very lapsed Catholic.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You could buy a set of Rosary beads and give cash. That's what I usually do if I am not a godparent to the child. Even if the child gets more than 1 set of Rosary beads, it's not like they won't use them through the years....they get lost etc.

I always give a check unless it's a relative. My niece is making her's next weekend and I bought her a beautiful diamond cross.
