We are thinking about burning some FF miles and instead of going coach we were thinking of first class. Is first class really worth the extra cost/miles? What extras do you get? Is the meal service that good and can you drink enough alcohol to make it worth while? The skymiles go from 25,000 to 45,000 which is almost twice the amount. We would get one first class flight instead of two coach class flights, is it worth it?

Long flight Portland, OR to Atlanta and then small hopper from Atlanta to Savannah. We are going to Hilton Head for Spring Break of 2006.

We used our Delta Sky Miles for first class traveling from Ct. to Honolulu, and Maui back to Ct. It's about 11 to 13 hour trip, so its a lot of "air time". I enjoyed it. I liked the seats, movies, video games, meal, etc. Would I spend my miles for a first class seat for a 6 hr flight? Not unless I had miles that I wouldn't miss. I work at saving miles, groceries, gas, etc. and when we get enough we go to Hawaii.

FC is hardly ever "worth it" if you are calculating how much you can eat/drink. OTOH, if you value some comfort and room to cross your legs especially on a long flight, then you may indeed judge it worth while. Food will be passable, but not outstanding. Drinks are pretty good - usually a reasonable choice of wines. Pretty standard hard drinks, and my favorite is having Bailey's in my coffee.

I agree with OKW Lover, the food is passable at best unless you order a special meal and then you have a chance. For any flight over 3 hours we think it is worth it, especially if you get on a 777. Each seat has a screen and really wide comfy seats.

I would probably do it for the long flight. There may not be a first class cabin on the Atlanta Savannah and even if there is the service won't be great. It should be better on the long flight and the extra seat size/leg room are nice on those long flights.

I did just what you are suggesting, but I did it because I had no choice. We are flying to FL for Pres. week 2006 from Sacramento and there were no coach award seats available. I started 331 days out and kept trying while I was watching the airfare go higher as the 'cheap' seats were sold. I had no problem getting the FC award seats. I was hoping not to burn that many miles at one time, but this is exactly what I have been saving them for - a great family vacation. I think this will start us off great.

For a long flight (especially if it's a red-eye from Portland) it is definitely WORTH it! It is so much more comfortable, especially if you end up on a full flight. Full flight in Coach across Country is not always fun. But I would just consider how many miles I have, how often I use them, and how much I travel. Sometimes, if it means an extra free flight somewhere else, I'll just fly coach. Or, if I can fly to Europe or the Caribbean with my miles, I'll use them for that instead. Depends on my plans and priorities. But First Class is definitely a treat for me!

Well, tonight I booked our Spring Break Flight! DH and I could not decide between coach and first class. We decided to let our DD decide. She decided First Class sounded fun :cheer2: so that is what I booked!

A lot of miles! I hope we feel it is worth the miles spent! I chose the long flight of Portland to Atlanta and a small plane with first class from Atlanta to Savannah. All our flights we are seated in row 1! :goodvibes I know our flights will change a few time over the next 10 months I will keep an eye out for better flight time/bigger planes. We would never spend the money on first class, so we are gonna splurge using skymiles!

On longer flights, I think it makes sense. Have done it for travel from PHL-LAX. For us, flying to WDW takes a little over 2 hours though, so we grin and bear it in coach! :crowded:

You need to board as SOON as they call first class. The problem with row 1 is there is no space under the seat in front of you so you need to grab the overhead over your seats IMMEDIATELY! It will not be left open for you. (First class flyers are bin hogs!)

I never thought of the space in front of us for storage. Should I move us back a seat? What is the best row to go for?
