As I was checking in online for my flight (to depart tomorrow) I was offered an upgrade (Continental) for just $69!!! Especially considering you can check your bag in for free, what a great deal!!

Anyone ever heard of this?? In all my years of flying I've never seen an upgrade to first class on a major airline being this low!!!

What a great break!! I have never flown first class, but would jump on this deal if I were you.

It happens from time to time if there are any seats available after the frequent flier upgrade windows have come and gone. Depending on the airline and the circumstances I have seen such upgrades offered at check-in (even at the airport kiosks) or at the gate itself. If the airline collect an additiona $50+ bucks for a seat vs. having it fly empty that's all money in the bank to them. I haven't seen it happen often, however, as first class on most of the flights I'm on are filled with frequent fliers who have obtained upgrades.

Happens ALL the time...very few Domestic First Class seats are actually purchased at full fare, most are upgrades for status members or purchased upgrades at check-in.

I have never ever heard of this before. In my experience, they would rather have seats in first class go empty than give them away for $69. I'm thinking this is the bad economy. People aren't flying as much, so not racking up the miles for status, maybe. And are definitely not paying full fare.

I hope the first class service is still good. Last time I flew first class was in 2000, I think.

Used to happen all the time on us air. I don't see it as often on delta, as there are enough people with status to fill it most of the time. But leisure routes are more likely to have them.

Alaska Air offers this option, but the price is based on the length of the flight, starting at $50.

Considering you get to check bags for free, and you may get a meal, I think it's a pretty good deal.

US Airways does this too. If they still have First Class seats left after the elite members are upgraded they will sell upgrades starting at $50. I think a transcon flight (ex. PHL-LAX) costs $150, and you can even upgrade on a transatlantic flight for $500 :thumbsup2

It happens all the time with me on American Airlines. I still refuse though, since I usually get upgraded based on status anyway.

Are you going to Orlando? I've found Orlando to be an easy market for upgrades. There is not alot of business travel, mostly leisure travel and less elites competing for upgrades.

I've been upgraded for free when checking my baggage at the airport. It's always when traveling alone. My guess is that they're over booked and having me moved to an empty first class seat allows them to accept 2 or more people traveling together in coach.

Happens all the time, especially to MCO, for the reasons debbieB mentioned. Hopefully you know that domestic first class on a flight from new jersey (NY?) will get you: free booze, a bigger seat, boarding first, free baggage, access to the first class check in line, possibly a first class security line (depends on airport) and free food IF your flight is longer than 2 hours and within a traditional meal time as defined by the airline. (not sure of Continental rules and regs and perks exactly, but those are American Airlines')

While many seats in the F cabin are upgrades for elite passengers, you may be surprised to learn that just as many people actually buy first class tickets. I have elite status on American Airlines so get upgraded for free often, but actually am lucky enough to fly paid First even more often. I can tell you that when my tickets are booked, many F seats are already taken by other full fare passengers, so clearly other people besides myself (my company) are buying them. Businesses will pay to fly their employees first class either as a perk of employment, or because they want their employee to arrive at their destination rested, happy, and ready to work. :thumbsup2

All that being said, enjoy your flight in F, it's the best way to travel, it takes so many of the negatives and hassles away from the airport experience and gives you a great start to your trip. :goodvibes (can you say, "priceless?!" LOL) I use the free or cheap upgrades for personal travel, but for work, it's always paid first class.
My last work trip was to Europe for just a few days; the company paid to fly me in F because otherwise I wouldn't be "bright eyed and bushy tailed" when I arrived, so obviously it's to their advantage to pay for F. :goodvibes Or at least, that's what I keep telling them ;)

Sounds like the upgrade price of an Airtran flight. We have been upgrading for years like this with them. When we flew on USAir we also were offered the low rate.

We always pay the $49 upgrade fee on AirTran. The extra room and being able to board in Zone 1 makes it worth every penny.

Yeah, this upgrade occurred to me on my flight from Phoenix back home through AA one time.

Let's not keep discussing how much nicer FC is, please. It only leaves fewer seats for those of us who grab them when they remain unsold... ;) Thank you for your cooperation.

I try to upgrade last minute when we can by grabbing seats to boost my frequent flier elite level. Anything more than $100 really isnt worth it for under 3 hours. On a side note, nothing makes me more mad than being #1 on the upgrade list than seeing 4 and 5 yo's in first class...They dont appreciate it!

I guess you wouldn't like seeing my nephew who is 4 and has more frequent flyer miles in first class then some business travelers.

Although a 4 or 5 year old may not appreciate it (I could debate this as he loves the extra room and the special attention the flight attendants give him, including snacks and juice as often has he wants), the parent or guardian of the child does and I don't think many would go sit in first class while their child is sitting in coach (at least at that age).

The parents are just fully utilizing their companion upgrade benefit. They could also be paying for the ticket with cash. Don't like it? Fly more and earn yourself a higher position in the upgrade que!

My 11, 7, and 3 year old nieces; and my 5 year old nephew, are all either Gold or Platinum on American Airlines, and at least Silver on Continental/Copa. Their dad travels over 250 days a year for work, and on the weekends a few of the kids, if not all, will fly out to be with dad.

Hell, at age 10 I was already AA Gold, and by 20, lifetime gold. Now I'm lifetime Plat, and have switched to Continental/COPA and am already Gold and on my way to Platinum.
