Well it didn't go exactly how I had envisioned it. Woke up to a rainy cold front. 68 outset and pouring. Was kind of relieved since I found out last night the race was going down main street where I live and know lots of people just before the parade comes. Ugh!!!! I didn't want to do my first with the whole world watching. But go bold, or go home.

My stomach was in knots. I took two tums and drank a little milk with a piece of toast.

Got there and hadn't thought that the rain would keep most of the walkers home. Agh!!! About 20 of us showed. I was def the heaviest. I know I shouldn't over analyze but... So it starts and I'm walking my heart out really wishing I had stretched more. Definitely was Feeling the burn from that.

This guy middle aged dressed in a track suit plainly labeled as our local track coach paired up with me. We started talking and he does lots of walks. No longer coaches because of two knee surgeries. He was my angel. He talked/coached me the whole way through. When we got to the end he stopped at the finish and let me go so I wouldn't be last. How sweet!!!!

Now for my over critical part of myself. I'm scared because I was last. Can I really do this? Grrr why must I beat myself up so badly. I also fired up my shin splints that I had been babying during my training. :(

I am proud that I did it and I have overcome alot but I'm not feeling like an athlete right now. My walking friend bailed on me this morning. At least I had the guts to show up.

I'm just struggling and in need of a shove in the right direction.

You are amazing! :cool1: I was just looking for inspiration and here you were.

I'm just starting back to fitness too, after years of underdoing it, or trying and not really getting off the ground with fitness/weightloss efforts. Just from your post here I can tell you overcame several obstacles to make this happen. Shin splints, rain, a buddy not showing up...Making it through all that makes you an athlete no matter what.

Here are two things that have helped me when I needed a good shove.
1. Keep in mind that you weren't last at all. You beat everyone sitting on their rumps on their couches. No matter what happens in a race, you still beat the 90% of people who don't take the first step. Good work!

2. To create a strong and well-crafted sword, the metal must be heated, hammered, and pressed repeatedly. Without that the sword would be weak and useless. Does the sword like being hammered and beaten? NO, but do you know what it does like? Being a freaking sword. You can be the sword.

I don't know if this is kosher to promote here, but do a web search for SparkPeople. It's free and has lots of tools and support for those times when you're needing info, advice, or support. I love it!

Congrats again on making the first of many 2ks! You rock!

Oh also! If you have shin splints you may want to try different shoes.

I thought it was just a hazard of my larger than average runner's size, but I got fitted at a place that specializes in running shoes and it made a world of difference.

I was intimidated by running stores since I "only" did 5Ks or less and thought everyone there would be marathoners, but they were really helpful, and really took the time to educate me on what to look for instead of just trying to sell me the most expensive pair.

THANK YOU!!! :flower3:

I'm going to walk today and wait on the next day of C25K tomorrow. I iced my shin splints last night and this morning they still hurt. I'm just going to try to take it easy and keep on moving.

I appreciate your kind words and suggestions. :)

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Do you know the WISH motto?

DLF>DNF>DNS

Dead Last Finish>Did Not Finish>Did Not Start :)

It was miserable yesterday morning. My DH and I delayed the start of our long run until the rain stopped. Good for you for going out. You should be so proud of yourself!:goodvibes

ITA on getting your shoes checked if you haven't already. There are lots of stretches etc to do for shin splints and icing is always a good idea! Great job not letting them make you stop!

Anytime you get frustrated on this healthy life journey you can now say to yourself--I got myself out of bed, in the rain, and did this walk even when I really didn't want to, so I can do xxxxxx!

Congratulations!!

Congratulations!

You showed up and finished a race in the rain! You may have finished last out of all the people that showed up but think about all the people you beat. You beat all the people who stayed home because of the rain. So you came in 20th in your first race. Top 20 finish is awesome!

You should be proud of yourself! You did it! You set a goal and accomplished it! Great job!
