We have been able to sit on the grassy area in the past to watch the fireworks. Is that still possible or is the entire area reserved for the Dessert Party now?

The Tomorrowland side Hub Grass is reserved
The Adventureland side Hub Grass is open

I was just posting about this in another thread to see if anyone else had experienced this...When I was there with my sister on 4/17 (day after Easter), we did the Plaza Garden View Dessert Party but they only had half of the space reserved for the dessert party - the left half if you're looking at the castle. They had a big piece of tape dividing the two sides. The interior side of the garden was open seating, which we confirmed with the CM at the gate. She wouldn't explain why or how often it is like this, so I don't know if this was a regular thing or if had just undersold for the night or something?

ETA: I had typed the right half of the garden, but really it was the left half if you're facing the castle - d'oh!

We were there April 25-May 2 and saw Wishes 3 nights from the "Open viewing area". Except that only the left half (of the "open viewing" side) was open all 3 times. They had rope/tape blocking half of it. The first night (Tuesday, April 25) there were about 10 people in the right half of the area, but they all had really fancy camera equipment so I assumed they had set it up with Disney or they were Disney trying to get good video/stills without taking prime real estate during the last couple of nights when the crowds would be terrible. The 2nd time we saw it (Friday, April 28), there was the tape again. This time several groups of high schoolers from Canada were in the roped off area. I again assumed this was part of some package deal they got from Disney. The last night (Monday, May 1st) we were there, the rope was there and there were people on the other side of it, but it wasn't obvious what sort of group (if any) they were. I'm not sure if you could go around and just enter from the other side or if it was roped off for a reason. We were at the very end of a long week with a preschooler and a baby so we didn't try to find out.

That said, we were able to find seating for 4 adults, 2 preschoolers, and a baby about 25 minutes to show time the first 2 times. The last time we went and sat about 45 minutes early just because we were tired and coming straight from DHS. We also got lucky, and all 3 nights, everyone in that area stayed seated. It meant we could watch with the kids in our laps and not have to hold them up.

Nothing is "always the same way" at WDW.
(And, keep the reports coming in, BTW.)

But, until the CMs stabilize what they want to do (if ever,)
I'll just keep things "in general" regarding the Hub map.

If I made changes every time Disney gets a wild hair about something, I'd be knee-deep in revised maps.
(Not that I'm not ankle-deep in 'em already.) ;)

Your maps rock! It's how we knew to go there in the first place. I just thought that people may want to get there a smidge earlier just in case there is only half the anticipated room.

@icesk8abc - D'oh! I meant the left side if you're facing the castle, not the right! Like I said, when we were there, the CM just said it was open seating but maybe sometimes it is reserved for groups. We stayed at the back toward the railing and had plenty of space - most people in the front were standing, then there were some people in the middle that stayed seated on the grass during Wishes.

I agree.
In fact, everyone should ALWAYS arrive a smidge (or a smidge-and-a-half) earlier to ANYTHING, just in case.
;)

Definitely not suggesting that you change the map! I was just surprised at the time and curious if others had experienced it. The CM didn't indicate that it was for a group that particular night - she definitely said open seating - so I would imagine at times maybe it is a well-kept secret, since the Hub area was already starting to fill up and the people inside the garden area had a lot of space since most people thought it was for the dessert party!

"Normally" Desert Party area is just about 1/2 of the area. From time to time, Guest Relations will require an additional area "reserved" for their usage (never really know what they have, as the list just indicates that they need some additional area), but doesn't happen every night though.
