Hey girls!
I live in Central Florida and wanted to give you guys a heads up. Anyone who is going to be around the area over the next couple of days...maybe even weeks may want to read this.

There are tons of fires all over Central Florida...I'm watching the news right now (actually I've been watching it all day..the fires are so bad the local news channels have taken over the networks to broadcast continuously) and its showing house after house being burnt to the ground. Its very sad.

I'm posting this because these fires are only about 1 hr away from WDW. There is a lot of smoke in the air and it may affect visibility. I-95 is shut down in a lot of areas and I-4 has low visibility. They are expecting these fires (there are about 15 of them) the spread over central florida, but have said that the parks and Lake Buena Vista area should be ok. So if you're headed here...just a heads up. It may be pretty smokey/smoggy.

:thumbsup2

PS~ It is really sad sitting here watching a live news feed and seeing houses burn down. Its terrible. And the fires near these homes were set by an arsonist.(sp?)

How terrible!! Living in AZ we deal with wildfires every year. It is horrible to see people's homes burn down. I hope that no one gets hurt!

Thank you for posting this! I had no idea! Is it really dry in that area right now? It just seems really weird for florida to be plagued by fires when its suppose to be so wet. Do you know the specific areas that are affected? I would appreciate the information, as I am planning to drive down from Canada this coming weekend.

It hasn't rained in over a month in most areas, and with the heat we've been having it's just dried everything out.

The most affected areas are along the Atlantic coastline...Daytona, Brevard County, etc. I would do a search online to find out which roads are closed before you head this way. Though it will change every couple hours. Right now the fire is actually burning its way across I-95, making it impossible to pass through. So don't take that way! I'll post anything new I find out. :)

Oh, this makes me so nervous. I've got family all over in Florida, including my dad (in Tampa) and grandparents (in Boynton Beach). We've got friends/family in Daytona, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, all over. I really hope they get this stuff fixed up! It's so horrible! :(

I know that the news about the fires in Central Fl. is very disturbing. But my husband and I watched the news all day. They are no way close to WDW.

We went to DHS tonight as well as Epcot. The fires are well away from the Resort areas.

The fires are mostly in the coastal areas - and that is at least 60 miles from WDW. Please do not panic, just enjoy your vacation.

Yes, this was not meant to start a panic. However, a lot of people that come into the central FL area come along 95 or the turnpike, and the fires are along both highways. So just be careful if you're on the roads :)

This is so sad. :guilty: I'll be keeping all you locals in my thoughts and hope every one will be ok. I hadn't heard about the fires (upstate new yorker with little time for news broadcasts), but I really hope everything works out. Mother nature sure can be a @#$^. How horrible was that recent cyclone? over 100K dead? and then the gov't stealing the aid the UN was sending? unbelievable.:sad2:

I will be there tomorrow. We were there last May when the fires were in GA. My brother lives in Ft Myers and is in coming in to see us on Friday. I will need to remind him to look at the news in case of closures . Thanks.

I remember last May they had a problem with fires too. I couldn't tell a difference at WDW it was maybe a little hazy but that is about it.

Yeah, last year we didn't have much of a problem in Florida, all of the fires were in Georgia. But we could smell them and see the smoke way down here. I'm only about an hour north of WDW and it was so smoky here last year...thats 4-5 hours away from where the fires were. DF and I would see ashes blowing by as we walked into a restaurant or store. Our cars had ash on them...it was so strange. So depending on which way the wind is blowing you can really see some smoke when these fires get going. Its scary, even being so far away.
