First let me say I am very proud of myself.
My unoffical time was: 3 hours and 1 minute.
I knew when I committed to this I would finish unless there was some medical emergency. Walking 13.1 miles is not a walk in the park. In the Atlanta half-marathon there were 4 major hills (mile4, mile5, mile6 and mile7). There were also a few minor hills and 2 of them were after mile 11. At that point they are no longer minor.
There were spectators and volunteers along the race route cheering us on. The temperature was in the low 50's and thank goodness it didn't rain. I didn't really get tired until after mile 9.
When I got home I changed clothes and applied Thera-gesic (similar to Ben-Gay) on my very tired legs. I am so sore I don't want to move, however, I find the more I move the better I feel. We have a massage item called the Stick and I have also used that on my legs.
Overall I am fine; I just have to give my body time to recover.
Thanks to all the W.I.S.H.ers. The support given at this forum is great.
Good luck to those participating in the Disney half-marathon.
A book I found helpful was:
Marathoning for mortals : a regular person's guide to the joy of running or walking a half-marathon or marathon by John Bingham.
Below is a brief journal as I got ready and finished my first half-marathon:
Day before the half-marathon walk:
Loaded up on Powerade(64 oz 152 gm of carbs) and water
Veggie links and Uncle Sam's cereal for breakfast
Salad for lunch
Veggie Lovers pizza from Pizza Hut for dinner.
I meant to get on the treadmill for 20 minutes but with shopping and cooking I never did fit it in to my day.
Day of half-marathon:
My husband
got up early and drove me to the start line so that I didn't have to take the train as suggested by the race officals.
Old-fashioned oatmeal for breakfast
Water and Powerade were offered several times during the race.
At first I drank 4 sips of water and 4 sips of Powerade at each stop. Later I just drank the Powerade.
I Took cashews along and after the 6th and 9th mile ate a handful of cashews.
At the end of the race they provided snacks and drinks. I had Powerade and a regular Coke. They also had diet coke but I don't drink diet drinks unless they are sweetened with Splenda.
They also had a snack bag with the following goodies: raisins and cherries, a fruit and nut bar, a chocolate peanut butter granola bar and a Snickers bar. I was good and did not eat any of that.
(Every item is a no-no on SBD)
Called my husband
at the 9 mile mark and he was there
waiting for me when I crossed the finish line.
After the half-marathon I came home and ate the last 2 slices of veggie lovers' pizza.(Had to get rid of it right?)
Now I am drinking water to replenish fluids loss.
Also, back to SBD program for Thanksgiving Dinner.

that is you -- walking and toooo cool!!!!

here in Ontario, so pretty much my outdoor walking will be halted until spring ... the sidewalks get very slippery and it's pretty risky to be out there trying to make good time. I'm hoping that Curves and WATP will build my endurance over the winter months so that the roadwork will be a piece of cake come spring.
