Finding something at home instead of buying new

I'm just so excited. I need to make a cupcake tower. I bought a cardboard one at AC Moore. It looked cheesy. I did some Googling on how to make a cupcake stand. Got some ideas. I tried stacking some plastic plates on cups. Looked a lot better than the cardboard stand. Then I started rummaging in my hutch. Turns out, I own 4 cake plates, 3 with pedestals. How on earth did I get 4 cake plates?! They stack nicely on top of each other, making a lovely tower. Don't you just LOVE it when you find exactly what you need in your own cupboards?

(and as for how I got 4 cake plates, when my MIL passed away we got 3 from her, and one for our wedding as a gift from my MOH. Having never used the ones MIL left us, I totally forgot they were there!)

Then, I tried making cupcakes with daisies out of frosting. It was a disaster. I can't make a frosting daisy to save my life. I figured I'd have to buy cupcakes with daisies on them from the grocery store. Then it dawned on me...we had silk flowers left from our wedding in 2002...might there be daisies left? Yup! Dozens of little silk daisies! Score! Saved myself a small fortune! I'll be baking cupcakes and adorning them with silk daisies! Yahoo!

I saw a really cute marshmallow daisy cupcake the other day - cutting up marshmallows has got to be easier than trying to make flowers from frosting. =)

Thank you for that link! Those are adorable! I've been playing with my cake plates to get the proportions just right. I have a green one between 2 clear ones. The sizing is perfect! The green one has a little matching dessert plate that I might use to make a 4th tier to hold one cupcake on the top. Sigh. This will look beautiful!

Sounds like a great idea and I love when that happens! I also have a cupboard full of MIL's old glass and I love to find reasons to use it!

The daisy cupcakes are really cute too!

Pictures will be a while...I won't be making the cupcakes till this summer. Just wanted to figure out a plan before it snuck up on me! I'm finishing grad school this summer so I'm trying to plan events and such carefully so I can still enjoy summer but also get this darn degree DONE! I could post a pic of the empty cake plates...but that seems so boring!

I'd make sure you give those silk daisy flowers a good soaking/cleaning. Wouldn't want the DIS germ patrol after you.
