Finally got my Passport renewal!

Only took 19 weeks and 1 business day for it to come! Now I get to on vacation to....umm...let us see...my backyard? Sure, we will go with that!

HA! Right? I mailed mine in at the end of May because I knew it would take a while. I know they got it because the check has been cashed. No real hurry now... The place I usually go camping in Mexico is still closed to non-residents and I don't have super high confidence that they'll be allowing us across the border prior to our October dates. I also had a trip to Africa planned in February but that has now been pushed back to at least 2022 so.... hooray. Backyard it is.

LOL. I know what you are talking about. We applied for Global Entry in February. DD and DW were approved in two days.

It is the end of July, and I'm still waiting for an answer... :confused3

Same happend to DH last year. Ours were renewed in a couple of days. It took his four months and he received a conditional approval. The airport was too backed up upon reentering the country for an interview. Now he's had two appointments rescheduled due to COVID closures. This is crazy. Ł

I'm not quite sure what to do. I managed to get my Real ID driver license and the enforcement is going to be delayed anyways. I didn't get my passport card renewed last year, and I should be able to renew both at the same time.

My passport expires next month, but I don't have anything planned where I would need it. I theoretically have until 2025 to have it renewed at the mail-in price.

Congratulations! Since it took so long to arrive, had your old passport expired before you received the replacement, and if so, did your passport expiration date change?

I don't really care if they shut it down -- but let us KNOW! I can understand not doing low-priority interviews in this situation, but there is no excuse for such crappy customer service. They have had our $300 since February and have provided absolutely nothing for it, and there is no way to contact anyone.

Trying to escape America? Is the wall to keep people out or keep people in? Inquiring minds want to know.

Old passport had yet to expire. No date change.

A standard US passport expires exactly 10 years (minus one day) from the date it's issued and the expiration isn't related to when the previous passport expired. If there's a processing delay then the expiration date will be later.

There's 15 years from the date of issuance of a passport to get it renewed by mail. And a passport can be renewed for any reason at any time. One could get a new passport just to use a different photo. Many get their passports renewed early because some countries have entry requirements of a passport with a minimum validity (i.e. 180 days). Some heavy travelers might get a new passport rather than order additional pages that are attached to the original passport. I wouldn't want to deal with this:

Of course the expiration date of a new passport isn't related to that of the old one. It's always valid for exactly 10 years.

I honestly had no idea that is how it worked. This was my first time getting a renewal.

EDIT: Just got my old passport back in the mail it was dated September 21 2010 to September 20 2020. My new one is July 23 2020 to July 22 2030. I am not a smart man.

Mine took about 22 weeks. I sent in the renewal at the end of January and I received my new one the last week of June. I think it had to have been just about ready to ship when the shutdown happened as the issue date is March 18. I'm guessing it sat on a desk or in a mail bin for the next 3 months. Didn't matter...I wasn't going anywhere anyway.

I've gotten mine renewed twice. The first time it was about ready to expire in about 5 months. I got my second renewal (well before expiration) back in 2010 before the State Dept raised the price. For every time it was a 10 year passport starting on the date it was issued.

OK thanks. I always had mine renewed before any deadline. I once paid extra for expedited. It wasn’t expired, but the trip came up kind of last minute, and I hadn‘t gotten around to renewing since I had no immediate plans requiring a passport. But I would not have had the required six months or more left on it by the time of this new trip.

So the processing delays didn’t require any expiration date changes then, since it always was just ten years from when issued. Is the fifteen year from date of issuance deadline based on when they receive the application? Just wondering if a processing delay on their part could affect such renewals.

It's from the date it's issued. And for some reason they make it exactly 10 years inclusive and won't just give that extra day (i.e. Aug 10, 2020 to Aug 9, 2030 instead of Aug 10, 2030). Even if the passport is expired more than 15 years, it's still proof of citizenship so it wouldn't require digging up a birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, Certificate of Naturalization, etc. I think even a cancelled passport could be used as proof of citizenship for a new passport application.

I think one is supposed to turn in the last passport so it can be cancelled.

If there were delays, I would have preferred there be an actual processing delay rather than an issued passport just sitting around somewhere waiting to be mailed. That would give a little more time before it expires.

Both DD's have to do interviews, tried to do them when we went through customs 3/21 and was told they couldn't do it. It's been almost 9 months since both were conditionally approved.

I'm on week 12 waiting for mine. Luckily I'm not scheduled to travel internationally for work until Feb. 2021.

Thank you for these real time updates! My kids will be needing renewals, as they expire in February 2021. Hoping for London next summer, but not real confident that will actually happen. This thread spurned me on to look into Global Entry for DS17 who will be attending an undergraduate program overseas for five years. Most of the enrollment centers show absolutely no appointment info, but thankfully Denver does show availability. Starting June 9, 2021. 🤯
