I finally decided on the Kodak Easyshare camera (6440) and now I have 2 last questions. First can anyone recommend where online to buy it from and two can you use any brand name memory card or do you have to get a Kodak??

Thanks again so much, I'll be glad to get it and finally get on with learning how to use it.

Congratulations! You won't be sorry!!

First question: I would buy somewhere where you can return it if there is a problem with it. You can buy online, but, here again, do it at a place where you have a local store (such as Best Buy or Office Max). Shop around, find out who has free shipping (because there is a catch to buying at an online site that has a local outlet, you pay sales tax). I got lucky and Office Max made a boo-boo in their pricing and I got it $100 less than listed price (they didn't have to honor their mistake, but they did).

Secondly, you do not have to limit yourself to just Kodak memory cards. I did extensive reading about the different memory cards (I like the comment sections on Amazon.com and Target.com for real user opinions). Most people say that SanDisc is not reliable so I steared clear. I got the Lexars and have been extremely happy with them. Every couple of weeks Buy.com has sales on their memory with free shipping. The prices really have gone down since I bought mine in November!!

That's the camera I have and you won't be sorry. I bought mine at Best Buy and it came with the docking station . I use a SanDisk 256 MB SD card that I bought with the camera back in Dec/03 and I'm still using it and the same rechargable battery that came with the camera. Good luck with your new camera.

I just bought a Kodak Easy Share DX7440, and I love it. A friend told me about a website to buy discounted memory cards. Assuming your camera uses SD memroy (as mine does), then visit Zip Zoom Fly for a special deal.

They have 256MB SD cards for $24.90, with a $15 rebate (limit two). Final price: $9.90 with FREE SHIPPING!!! I just ordered them and should receive them today.

This is a much cheaper prices than the $80 that Circuit City charges per 256MB card. However, they are a brand name I have never heard of.

I can't comment on quality since I haven't received them yet, but the two-day UPS shipping was free and my tracking info says they will arrive today.

I figured for $10 each, what a deal!!! The rebate only runs on purchases made through 9/30 (I believe), so head to the site quick if you want them.

We will be taking three 256MB cards for an 8-day WDW trip, and I hope that is enough!!! (I'm used to 7-8 rolls of film in that time)

True story...

We got a digital camera 2 years ago for XMAS...went to MK the week after. I dropped the camera in front of Spash Mtn. It was dead...did not work at all. Luckily, we had the gift receipt from Best Buy...went to guest relations and they gave us really good directions to Best Buy....we went there and did an even exchange for a new camera. Our gift giver purchased the warranty.

Lesson is...get the camera at a reputable national chain store...they are really fragile. We were able to exchange it and got back to the park for some late afternoon fun and photo ops!

If you get it online, you would be without one for weeks or SOL alltogether

I too have recently started looking into Kodak digital cameras and have my eye on 3 of them. The LS753, LS743, and the DX7440. In doing some online price comparisons, I have found www.costco.com to be the cheapest for all 3. The LS753 and LS743 have really dropped in price in the past few days. If memory serves, the LS753 is going for $279.99 and the LS743 is going for $249.99. The DX7440 remains $269.99. Of course, if you're not a costco member, they charge you a fee, which I checked out and appears to be something like $11-12 more. And you still have to pay for shipping. Still, all in all, it is still the cheapest prices I have seen.

Just wanted to give everyone the skinny on what I've seen. Would be interested in knowing if anyone else has some pricing on them.

I'd buy it anywhere with a decent return policy. I've heard of many people getting their Kodak cameras from Costco because of their generous return policy.

You can use any brand of memory.

I have a Kodak camera, a Panasonic SD card, and a Sandisk SD card.

I've been searching the boards for the past few months and debating whether to break down and buy a digital camera. I was also looking at the Kodaks-esp the LS models. My man fear is that I'll be totally lost using the camera and end up with no prics, or that I wont' beable to catch fast motion- I think some have a "burst feature". I need a simple, no-brainer camera that takes great pics. Is Kodak the route to take & what model? And are they reliable? Have to make my mind up real soon-times getting close! :

Donkeysleuth, you can go to www.cnet.com to read up on consumer reviews of almost anything. I checked over there for the 3 Kodak Easyshares I'm interested in (LS753, LS743 and the DX7440) and all 3 have gotten really good reviews (of course, the reviews aren't from a large number of people, BUT, it gives you some idea of how those who have purchased them think of them.)

Also, I read on another thread here in the DIS that there is a place that has really good prices on the SD memory cards, www.zipzoomfly.com. Haven't used them myself, but the prices seem really good.

As for pricing on the Easyshares, www.costco.com has really good prices on the I listed above, but of course, you have to pay shipping and tax, and if you're not a Costco member there is a charge of something like $12-$14 extra. Still, look at the prices on the LS753 and the LS743. Those prices are great and the only place I found that have lowered the prices on them (especially the LS753 for $279.00!!!)

Let me know how things turn out for you. I seem to be sitting on the fence myself about which to buy.
