DNephew was turning 7 the first time we took him to Disney World (nearly 7 years ago). Well, on that trip, the very first night, I snapped at him on the monorail leaving dinner at Chef Mickey's. No excuses, everybody was hot and tired and really overdue for bedtime (adults included). Well, for the last 7 years I have felt terrible about that...to the poin that it tainted many of my memories of that first trip because I felt bad for being unreasonably mean (my opinion). So, with his 3rd trip with us coming up I had to come clean and apologize to him for it. He says to me "Tia, I don't even remember you being mad at me. I do remember you not opening your eyes on Space Mountain though". Ah, the wonders of an apology...I feel better, he doesn't care and we will all have a great time.

Isn't it funny what kids (and adults, for that matter) remember?

I have some memories from when I was a child and was super horrible to my younger sister, whom I completely adore. (I particularly remember breaking a new doll she had just received for her birthday. :guilty: )I mentioned it to her a while ago, apologizing after many years of guilt -- and she didn't remember it at all!

Sometimes we remember mean things we have said or done, but the people we thought we mistreated just mark it up to us having a bad day and forget about it, while we drown in guilt!

I'm definitely glad I apologized -- though of course I wish I hadn't acted in a way that required an apology. :)

Next time you go to Disney with your nephew you should have someone take a picture of you and your nephew, with HUGE smiles, riding the monorail. Frame it in one of those great Disney World frames, and then that will be the new momorail memory you'll always remember.

Thank you for posting and sharing. I'm so glad that you will be able to let go of something that you have obviously held onto for so many years. Guilt truly is a powerful emotion. Like most things that weigh us down, after confronting them, it makes us wonder why we didn't confront them long ago.

I love the idea of the picture on the monorail. Now that memory is definitely something that you should hold onto for a long time!!

We are all really looking forward to this next trip. I have a new digital camera and 3 2G memory cards to fill up will special pics.

Lesson learned - don't wait so long to apologize.
