This from Today's Federal Register:

Pursuant to the Department of Homeland Security's REAL ID regulations, States must be in full compliance with the REAL ID Act of 2005 by May 11, 2011. This final rule changes that date to January 15, 2013. This change will give States the time necessary to ensure that driver's licenses and identification cards issued by States meet the security requirements of the REAL ID Act.

Like anyone else was keeping track... but there you have it.

So, for up to 8 years after the passage of this law, we will be flying "unsafe" due to states not complying. Yes, that "unsafe" is tongue in cheek . . . ID does not equal safety.

It would be nice if all IDs had the same requirements though. All states should require the same name listing. At least there would be a sameness...would be nice if licenses listed names the same way passports do...no confusion that way.

Nice? Why? NJ did just fine all those years we ddidn't have driver photos on our licenses. A DL is for driving, if politicians want to require all adult US residents to have an ID card, then they should be up front with that requirement and not back door it as they are now.

Along this same line what is the purpose of having to show ID to get into a Disney resort to park. We visited and ate at the Polynesian and Beach Club last week and DH had to show his Driver's license in order to get in to park. One of the guys didn't even look at it after he got it out and the other one read everything on it. What is the point of this? Are people safer at the resort because someone has a drivers license ? :confused3

It's supposed to deter people who are there to ride the bus to the parks and avoid the parking fee. Presumably if the guard sees the same name twice he'll know what they are up to. ;)

I personally don't think it does a darn thing except reduce restaurant revenue because it gives people the impression that you are not allowed to just visit resorts.

Did you mean to use  instead of ;)? Cuz I doubt that Disney's guards are so good that they recognize everyone one that passes through the guard station. :rolleyes1
