Much prefer the US cover too, ours just looks like a cartoon. Can't wait to read the book, although I fear an anti-climax when it gets to the end of the series.

I think the US cover is only marginally better than the UK cover. It's a little boring. Do you kind of get the feeling that J.K. Rolling is just tired? I hope she doesn't kill him off either, but I suspect she wants to.
That bothers me as well but I found it pretty easy with HBP. I think TV and radio presenters are aware of how much grief it would cause if any storylines leaked. The internet is probably the only place to be wary of. Oh and read fast!!

The book has a different publisher in the US than it has in the UK.
Each of the publishers has their own illustrator.
The UK publisher has used illustrator Jason Cockcroft for the children's edition of the new book and I think the 2 before it. I do know for sure that he has not illustrated all of the books. That illustration is being used for English speaking versions in countries other than the US.
Scholastic in the US has used Mary GrandPre as illustrator for all the books in the series. I like that because the books look like a series. I know the Mary GrandPre covers were used in some countries besides the US, but I can't remember where.
