We are ready to start purchasing and I have some final questions.

1) I read somewhere to buy direct first and somewhere to buy resale first. Is there actually one that’s better than the other?

2) How do use years work with lining them up? If I buy direct and then buy resale, so I have to try a resale that has the same use date?

3) we are looking at about 300 points. Am I better doing 150 at riviera and a 150 resale or just buying all at riviera due to the resale value of that resort?

4) Can someone explain pooling points between the direct and resale in plain English for me? Can I use both to book my home resort at 11 months or do I have to wait until 7?

Thanks in advance for any help given.

If you want to use all your points together for trips, without having to transfer or book trips separately, then you want the same membership, which has to be the same UY with the same owners.

It doesn’t matter what order you buy…direct vs resale. The reason people sometimes advise resale first is because DVD can match the UY easily. If you go direct first, then you have to wait until you find a contract you like that has the same UY.

When you have both direct and resale points, they can be used at all resorts, except RIV and any future resorts, at 7 months….unless you buy RIV resale which is only good at RIV.

If they are the same resort, then can be used at 11 months…doesn’t matter where you bought them.

If you go to book RIV, only the direct points will show up as a choice to use.

In terms of what to buy, it depends on how many you want to use at RIV. If 150 is enough and you don’t care about having restricted points, split them up.

If 150 at RIV is not enough, then I’d just buy those, split it into two 150 contracts and go from there.

We love RIv, and I do have both direct and resale there. But I also have 500 additional SSR to use other places if I need to So, having 125 points only good at RIV is no big deal for us.

One more reason to purchase resale first: direct purchase minimums.

If you're already a member, you can purchase a smaller number of direct points even if you are a resale buyer. If you purchase direct first, you must buy 150 points. It might not be an issue for many people but not everyone wants 150 direct points initially.

So, if I buy 150 at Riviera and then 150 through resale somewhere else, say Beach Club, can I combine them to make a reservation at Riviera?

No. Resale points are not good at RIV. Points carry the restrictions so it doesn’t matter what else you own.

Only direct points and resale RIV points can be used at RIV, except resale points purchased prior to January 2019.

No, there are resale restrictions on RIV in 2 ways: resale contracts bought after Jan 2019(some one can give me the correct date) cannot be used at RIV and RIV resale contracts can only be used at RIV. I have a 100 pt direct SSR contract and I can use those points at RIV, but my 210 pt resale contract bought in Jun 2020 cannot be used at RIV.

ONLY direct books can be used at RIV.

For example, if you had 1000 resale (assuming none are resale for RIV) and 150 direct, you could only ever use the 150 direct for RIV......

But you can use the 1000 for the other legacy resorts

Lots of people recommend buying resale first and direct afterwards so that you can match the UY more easily. DVC will always try to match the UY of any other contracts you already own. But if you need to match the UY of a resale contract, you have to shop around to find the matching UY, the right number of points and the right resort. That can be more difficult.

When the UY is not the same (and/or the contract is titled differently), you have different memberships. They cannot be combined without transferring, even if they are the same resort. If you have two different resorts under a single membership (same UY, titled the same), you can easily combine them at seven months out. At 11 months out, they cannot be combined if they are different resorts.
