Ok, this is is it - I need to make my final choice.
#Good problems to have

Option 1: Balcony non-conceirge trip to Mexico on the Disney Wonder (7days)
Option 2: Spa suite in the haven on the NCL Breakaway through New York, Nova Scotia, Maine.

Already have a downpayment on the DCL, but not too late for the refund, but the refund comes back onto the card (if I can figure out what to do with no actual physical card - had one, but it got lost when we moved.) anyway - once I get it back on the card, I can sell the card for most of the money we spent on it and pay that forward onto the NCL Trip. The NCL Trip is only like 1K more than my Disney Trip (DCL without concierge).

I keep going back and forth.
Help?

Is the trip on the eastern seaboard during fall foliage season?

First, do you have that card linked on mydisneygiftcard? If yes then once the refund is applied you can transfer to a different card that you have access to. If not, getting access to the refund funds may be a lot more difficult.

second, make sure you would be able to sell that gift card for what you need to pay for the NCL within the time frame that you would need to.

It is all through mydisney actually, that was the first thing I did - so that I could consolidate the payments
How long does it usually take to sell the card?

We did a Mexico cruise in a spa suite on Bliss, which is not a sister ship of Breakaway but similar. We also have sailed on 11 DCL cruises, in non-Concierge and Concierge.

NCL Haven was not for us. The service was lacking, from the stateroom host to the concierge to the dining room staff. We felt it was amateur at best. Our stateroom host‘s schedule was all over the place. We are so used of having our room magically done on DCL that coming back at 11AM after leaving at 8AM for breakfast and seeing it not cleaned yet surprised us. This was a spa suite with a jacuzzi, so they should expect you to spend so time in your room enjoying the bath. The host coming in at all hours to do his job is not very compatible with that.

The concierge did not seem to care about our requests and did not do any effort. One of the problems with anytime dining is that you need to book your meals, much like ADRs in WDW. On day one, we went to the Haven restaurant and realized that the menu was not very interesting and that it remained the same throughout the cruise. We are used to DCL‘s changing menus or Celebrity Luminae, the suite restaurant, which serves gastronomic dishes that also change every day, even on a 14-nights cruise. So we decided, because of that, that we would visit the other restaurants for dinner. Of course, we had not reserved any meal in advance since we thought we would be in Haven every night. On Celebrity, we never eat anywhere but Luminae.

Every restaurant except the BBQ place was sold out by then. We thought that, being concierge, they could squeeze us in. We asked the concierge to try to book three restaurants. Not only could he not make anything magically work, but he never got back to us. Eventually, one reservation appeared in our schedule and we never got news about it or the other two. All he seemed to have done is watch and wait for people to cancel. When we first arrived in the concierge lounge, he treated us as if we had sneaked in there and ask to see our sea card before letting us through to the bar. I get that we are in our 40’s and not the usual concierge crowd, but that’s a big difference with Disney Concierge, where they have a system in place to identify you to the hosts without them asking you directly your name. When they come and see you the first time, they call you by your first name.

Food is subjective, so I’ll just say that NCL food was not for us, except the Indian dishes at the buffet. The upscale Italian place was nowhere near Palo, at a higher cost. We had no interest in finishing our dishes at the other restaurants we tried, and payed for. It was just not very good. The main problem in every restaurant was the service. Servers didn’t know the dishes, the dishes arrived at different times, servers were arguing near us to determine who was taking care of our table...

The only things we positively remember from NCL were the shows - we had Jersey Boys - our butler, the spa room, the bartender at the Haven lounge, the Beatles tribute band, the trivias and the views from the observation deck. The crowd was strange - they had booked three singles group representing a third of the crowd, so you can guess the alcohol was flowing from morning til night, and there was also a furries group that paraded around the ship - but that was very specific to this sailing.

All of that turned us off the NCL completely. If that’s what you get in Haven, we have no intention of trying a regular class cabin anytime soon. We had a much better time on all our non-concierge DCL cruises and would chose that over NCL anytime. I understand that every cruise line has an audience. Our friend sails 4 times a year on NCL and swears by them. It’s just not for us...

I would choose option 1. I live in New England; there isn’t much, in the way of color, to be seen in early/mid September. Just seems like option 1 would be less hassle and less expensive.

I live in MA and agree with @party-of-five Really no fall foliage in early/mid September. Fall Foliage season is in October, peak is generally weeks 2 and 3 in October. I'd probably go with Option 1.

I have never sailed on NCL but I have heard very mixed reviews about the Haven. I also live in the NE and a New England/Canada cruise holds NO interest to me or my family, especially that time of year. That said, I know others have said they've been on many cruises and this was their favorite.

That 7-night Mexican Riviera on the Wonder is on my bucket list, so I'd choose that one!

Tough choice, but I'd probably choose DCL. I love the idea of NCL Haven but have heard it's slightly better executed on their Jewel-class ships than on the mega ships. I would have said NCL haven for sure if the price was less. For example we sailed concierge level on MSC for far, far less than the nearly identical cruise on DCL...so that was worth it. For costs being similar, I think you'll enjoy the DCL experience maybe even more than NCL haven.

Most of my Disney Cruises have been on the Wonder and last year (2019) I sailed on the NCL Breakaway form NOLA on a 12 day cruise. I did have a nice time on the Breakaway and the price was great. I did like my solo stateroom area with the exception of the small shower. My cabin host was wonderful but the rest of the crew was just average. The buffet had a large selection to choose from for breakfast and lunch but I found that the complimentary dining was below what I was expecting, nevertheless the paid dining options where great. I found some of the activities around the area where okay and the entertainment was a hit or miss. Comparing all the cruise lines I have sailed on I would have to say NCL is second from the bottom of my preferred cruise lines. I would definitely choose sailing on the Wonder over the Breakaway.

We just spent 7 days on the Wonder last week and had an amazing time. We were in a regular verandah cabin. I thought the staff was great and especially loved our servers, Vesko and Christian.

I live outside of Boston and I like to go warm places with my vacation money. I can’t conceive of going on a New England/Canada cruise. The weather could be practically anything in September and honestly it seems boring. But everyone appreciates different things in their vacations.

I’m an olaf at heart. Lying on a beach with a drink in my hand is where I want to be. Mexico cruise for sure.

To be fair the costs are nowhere near similar, at least not apples to apples. The concierge on NCL is roughly the same as just a balcony on DCL.

What's your favorite after DCL?

I keep hearing about the great service on Disney - but I haven't always felt it.
There have been few exceptional moments, but I also experience a lot of staff looking at me weird or being huffy because we don't have kids... like there's something wrong with us being there without them.

What's your favorite after DCL?
I would have to say RCCL. While on the Anthem of the Seas I did enjoy all the ship activities that RCCL offered; virtual skydiving, wave machine, rock climbing, bumper cars, roller skating, etc., which are more family or adult friendly. DCL service and entertainment was far better which are my top priorities when I cruise.
