I filed my taxes through TurboTax today. The IRS accepted my return and I just realized I forgot to deduct my union dues. I pay about $1400 a yr in dues. What should I do now? How much more would I get back with that kind of deduction? Feel soooo dumb for forgetting.

Hmm, I didn't do that either, but mine isn't as much as yours ($520 [i forgot that $15 of the $35 dues goes towards lobbying]). I suppose you could do an amended return, but odd, I don't remember seeing a place to put that in there...

P.S. It goes under "unreimbursed job expenses" so it has to exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income. Does it?

1. I would suggest waiting until you are sure your return has been processed.

2. Then do an amended return (on Form 1040-X) and file that.

3. I know on the professional version of TT it is a matter of calling up the 1040-X and tell it to lock in the original numbers. Then put the correct information in the spaces required. On the 1040-X in the space provided explain why you are doing the amended return. Print out the 1040-X and Schedule A; These have to be mailed as you cannot file a 1040-X online.

It is also best to wait to amend until you get your refund (if you're getting one). If you do it before sometimes the money gets all confused in transit. Best to wait. Also be sure the amount that you'll be getting back from the amendment isn't less than what it will cost you to file the amendment (if you have to pay extra for the software).

Good luck!

EXACTLY right, you have to wait until it is accepted, I am even thinking you have to wait for it to be completely processed? I have done amended returns a couple of times with Turbo Tax.
