We asked my FIL to come with us on our next cruise. He usually goes to WDW with us several times a year and loves it. I priced a CAT 9 for DH and I and put the kids in a 12 with FIL so he wouldn't have to pay for 1st/2nd passenger. The difference between getting 2 cabins and having our family of 4 in the CAT 9 was only $398. He thinks that it is too much! Especially after I told him that he would have to dress up a bit (he hates it). So he said he would eat the buffets by himself (very disagreeable). I explained he would still be expected to tip the waiters that he didn't use. He said he wasn't tipping them anything if after it was all said and done he would be paying $1000 (cabin, passport, trans, etc). So he isn't going! Can you believe it? Oh, well, I guess if he is this disagreeable now he probably would have had a terrible time. Oh! And it isn't a money issue, he is well to do.

Just had to get it out of me. Thanks for listening!

Doesn't sound like he would be a bucket of giggles as a travel companion anyway. Tell him you'll send him a postcard.

Ask you FIL to figure how much the daily average cost of a WDW trip is for him and using the same parameters (include airfare or both or don't use airfare in both) and figure the daily rate for DCL and then see which gives him more for less $$. For me, it usually worked out to be the cruise.

If tht doesn't work, once you get back and he hears the stories and sees the pictures he'll be sorry he didn't go

My parents are the BEST grandparents. They dote on my kids, spend countless hours with them, shower them with gifts, give them college money, flew us all to Alaska for a free cruise, etc. etc. When I asked them to join us on a DCL cruise they said "NO WAY!". When I asked why they said they could not concieve of a cruise with hundreds of kids and no casino. Go figure??

Since he doesn't want to go...I"ll go instead and be very pleasant :earboy2:

My dad is the same way. He won't cruise DCL with us either. My mom could probably handle all the kids, but my dad would go insane (I can see it happening). My dad handles Sea World better than DL. My dad can't get past the fact that the DCL ship isn't just for kids its for adults too.

I wouldn't go either if I was expected to room with a bunch of kids..lol.

He definately doesn't have to dress up..the dining rooms are casual. Still no shorts, but jeans are allowed. Definately don't have to pack dress clothes anymore.

If he is like that now, I wouldn't want him to be there on the cruise complaining all the time. That would ruin your fun since you would be worrying about him the entire time. I think that the OP was just pricing the rooms with her kids in the 12 so that the FIL's cost would be less. She didn't expect them to stay there with him.

So many (Non-DCL cruisers) have mentioned to us the fact that they wouldn't dream of a cruise without a casino. Having been on many other lines, when we finally did the Magic :wizard: we didn't miss it one bit. In fact, it was about the 5th day before we even thought about it :goodvibes

I promise to eat in all the resturaunts, dress appropriately, I will even babysit while you eat in Palo, if you take me!

We didn't expect him to sleep in the room with them. :)
One of his complaints too was the lack of gambling and then "I wouldn't go to Mexico for anything. Too Dangerous!" And of course, "You expect me to tip?! Not if I am already paying them that much."
I did explain that people wear jeans to dinner although it is not suggested and there are formal nights that we would need to dress up for. He said no way am I dressing up. DH's response was, "If he can't put on a pair of pants to have a nice dinner with his grandkids then I am not going to worry about him going!" So I just paid a deposit for the 4 of us on the 2 stopper CC cruise. Whooo hoooooo! :cheer2:

I have to agree with you webray. It must be guy thing. No offense ladies.

But since the kids would be staying and sleeping in your cabin, I guess he just doesn't want to go. His loss. Very nice of you to offer.

And I love DCL, too.

We are a military family and not very close to the IL's. (Miles & mental). We planned a 3 night Wonder. Out of the blue, I asked the DH if his Dad would join us, I never thought he would. FIL and MIL are big cruises on other lines, they live an hour from Port Canaveral. Well, in Feb he accepted the invitation and nothing else was said. Then on Father's Day, we told him we paid, he said he did too. In the mean time we thought he was backing out. The other puzzling thing is this is a man who could afford to join us in a cat 6 on deck 6. He is in a Cat 9 on deck 2. I would like them to be closer for the kids sake, but hard to explain to the kids when I don't understand myself.

He's probably a "depression kid" ... just like my dad ... has plenty of money, but hates to spend it ... both he and my mom watched their dollars ... and I'm guessing if I'd lived thru the great depression I'd feel the same way.

Also, as much as I love my GK I wouldn't pay for a Cat 6 room if I was the only person in it ... I rather stay in a cheaper stateroom and use the extra $$ to buy the GK souvenirs or debit cards for the QuarterMasters.

Just my thoughts.
