Fifteen sleeps until we leave - two last minute questions - towels and tolls...

1926Moon - I've been looking at rentals, as well, however I'm seeing exhorbitant prices for a vehicle. There are 4 of us, so maybe the size of vehicle we need makes a difference. Can I ask which rental company you are going with?

Hey! Mid-March I managed to book directly with Alamo - April 27 - May 15, midsize vehicle - $327.84 total :)
I used some discount codes and coupons I found in the April transportation thread found in the DISboards transportation forum. Let me know if you have any other questions, I am happy to answer them.

lots of out of date information about electronic tolls rentals here ....

current info for major rental companies here: https://www.sunpass.com/rentalcar

Majors all use a third party via 'toll by plate' - you will not see a transponder in the car. And most require nothing to "turn it on" - you don't get charged a fee unless you go thru an electronic 'gate'. If you pay cash, or have your own transponder, this will process FIRST. Toll by Plate only kicks in if the toll is not otherwise handled. Works like this when you HAVE a transponder. I routinely drive this route and usually don't have my transponder in the car. The system "sees" my plate and checks against the list of plates connected to a SUNPASS. It finds mine and I see the toll on my bill (at the reduced rate). This is why you need the PORTABLE transponder if you want to buy your own, and be sure to register the rental's tag in the system (there is an APP and it takes about 1 minute). You even ID the tag as a rental and can enter an expiration date where the tag is automatically deleted from your account - in case you forget.

Dollar Thrifty and FOX rentals are still charging crazy processing fees if you make a toll boo boo . . . $15 PER TOLL

(p.s. ONE post did have it right, but I repeat their info as one correct was buried under several WRONGs)

Thanks. So far, I'm seeing Alamo as the best rate, but through Costco and nothing like your rate. I'll have to do more searching for discounts.
