I didn't get sea sick on the boat, but afterwards. It has been two days now since they kicked me off the Magica and I still feel the boat swaying back and forth.

The sensation you describe is actually very common. It'll go away in a few days. I notice it most when I'm walking in a hallway or in a small room. Not sure if that's how it affects most people. Some lucky sailors don't experience it at all. I figure it's a gentle reminder of the ship!

I've been going through the same thing myself! Didn't feel it so much today as I did on Sunday!!! I felt it the most as I was sitting down at my computer catching up on email and reading the DIS board for a couple of hours. It's funny, when you're on the ship, you feel a little bit of motion, but when you're off the ship, you feel the motion even more!!! Go figure!

I am soooo glad it wasn't just me this happened to...my mother thought I was losing it when I said I was dizzy AFTER the cruise!! I actually wound up taking the Dramamine that never got used on the cruise other than 1 or 2 doses for each DD the first night. Symptoms lasted exactly 2 days for me and the worst was looking at the ceiling fan or lying on the bed!!

Nothing like this happened on our first short cruise. Maybe it has something to do with the length of the cruise...I'm just glad to know I wasn't crazy or truly having physical withdrawals from the great trip we had!!

I actually felt sea sick for about a week afterwards. The first few days I felt dizzy and a bit nauseous, then it gradually disappeared. I only had extremely mild symptoms on the ship - not bad enough to take the bonine I brought. I didn't realize then that I could take bonine AFTER the trip to help the symptoms - but I will do it after our next trip in Nov. Any other suggestions from fellow sufferers?

Hi!
I've seen other posts on this subject and I believe the term for what you're experiencing is Mal debarquement syndrome. (Sorry if I spelled it wrong).
I was dizzy after my first cruise and after being home for 1 week I went to the Dr. I told her I was seasick on the cruise - took some dramamine from the Nurse on board to relieve the sick feeling. Worked fine. The swaying motion continued after the cruise was over so my Dr. prescribed Bonine and I was good as new.
It's comforting to know I am not alone. Thank goodness for the message boards!!
Dr advised me to get the patch for my cruise this November - not sure if i want to. Perhaps will stick with Bonine......This time I'll take it before we leave!
Any advice is greatly appreciated...:)

This seems to be related to repetative movement and probaby the effect it has on some part of the brain with a fancy name like the "vestibular system". Our brains apparently can adjust to a certain amount of movement so that it feels "normal" and then when we stop being in that environment, the brain is still expecting it so there is a "rebound" effect and we feel that as movement--we are probably feeling the opposite but is there some way to test it? When our brains are accustomed to up, down, up, down and we are on land they are probably registering down, up, down, up. But since that is so similar and which is the first one--the up or the down--we feel it as the same movement we noticed on the ship.

When I was a teenager I skied every Saturday in the winter. When I went to bed Saturday night I felt like I was still skiiing the "washboard," the bumpy part of one of the trails. I figured it was an extension of the fun.

When I get the ship-movement feeling at home it reminds me of the wonderful time I had on the ship.

Now you have me worried. I have some propensity toward motion sickness, and we are planning on doing the Kennedy Space Center the day we get back from the cruise. My motion sickness has done much better in recent years, and I rarely have to take anything even on a bumpy plane ride. I even tolerate most roller coasters pretty well (Rock N Roller Coaster beats me up, though). Since I am on allergy medication, I am concerned that the doctor won't like me taking Bonine also. I guess I really need to check it out.

DOCTOR P: DON'T WORRY!! Sounds like you have found a regime that works for you. If you even TRIED Rockin Roller Coaster then the residual feeling of movement from the cruise will be NOTHING.

If you can do roller coasters of the normal variety, you will not mind this. It will make you laugh. Ah--the ground is moving like the ship--ahhh--nostalgia. You will enjoy the day at the Space Center and worst scenerio, you will put your hand out to hold a wall or railing on OCCASION!

Yes, check with your MD about the medications. That is always wise.

And--enjoy your trip!
