Fellowship of the fisheye

Very nice Tom. I think I might have flipped it in photoshop to correct the spelling and have fun confusing people as to how you got a different background than everyone elses ordinary shot that probably looks like mine. ;)

Great take on the sign though. You like the Samyang?

^I thought about flipping it, but then I thought that might be 'too much' as far as alterations go (eh, I probably should have just done it).

The Samyang (Rokinon) is FANTASTIC! I had some problems with manual focus the first day, but then I met up with Cody the second, and he explained things to me in my (idiot) terms. From there, it was an absolute breeze. I easily prefer it over the Tokina 10-17. For $230, it was a real bargain (and adds even more 'value' to the D7000 for me). Thanks for the recommendation!

I think there might be a lens under the tree for me, and I hope it is that one! I did also put Nikon's 35mm f/1.8 on my list, so it might be that -- or a right-angle viewfinder, which would also be good. But I'd be most excited by a new fisheye.

I'm getting my wife a Nikon 50mm f/1.8, because she always wants to borrow mine ...

Poor Tokina. ;)

I think the Samyang can safely be called the spiritual successor to the full-frame Zenitar 16mm fisheye:

The Samyang (Pro-Optic) 8mm- its like $260 at Adorama- I really like mine so far.

I hope that you won't take offense to this. I think that you post some amazing images here and this particular one really struck me. I wanted to try and capture something similar. I think that I failed from a composition standpoint but I definitely learned a lot from a technique perspective by trying this shot. I can't wait for my next opportunity to try similar shots. Thank you for the inspiration!

They say that "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" and I hope you look at it that way too!

I think we all emulate each other's shots, nothing bad there. I've been doing TTA fisheyes for at least four years now. :teeth: I'm pretty sure I've got a fair number of Gdad clones in my collection.

A couple b/w film TTA fisheyes:

I may have to try the second b/w shot in color, that's an angle that I haven't done since then (or seen anyone do though someone probably has)...

With your shot, I probably would have gotten a little closer, moving the center horizontal line farther up in the frame, which would give it a lot more curve. Right now that section seems a little flat. IMHO with a fisheye, you usually need to throw out most stuff you already know about composition. :)

edit: Looking again at Gdad's and my particular shot, it looks like we were standing in almost exactly the same spot; just pointed the camera in slightly different directions. Pretty funny.

Is that.........?

(checking Flickr)

It is! How'd you manage to get a tour of the suite? Very cool - my wife would flip to see it in person!

Yes, please do tell how you got a tour of the suite! I would love to see it in person too! Cool shot by the way.

Still waiting to find out how Bricker got to see the castle suite!

Gdad - I've got probably a couple thousand new fisheye shots, I just need some time to go through them. :) My one and only Spaceship Earth fisheye is remarkably similar to yours (though of course it won't get the HDR treatment), and night shots of the Imagination fountains at night was on the list but I was never able to make it happen. I think there are a fair number of "new" shots as well as some often-done photos and a set that is a blatant copy of some shots and you and Code did after the Disboards Photo Summit 2010.

Just purchased a fisheye for my Nikon digi SLR. So I'll be joining the Fellowship soon!

The photos here are gorgeous. Do you folks use tripods very often? Daytime? Night? Or the is capture of ambient light usually enough?

Thanks in advance. :santa:
