Fell asleep with A/C blowing on me!

So I dozed off early last night with my window A/C unit blowing directly on me. Of course today I wake up with a horrible sore throat, the chills, and, generally feel awful.

My Mom always warned me about sleeping with my fan or my A/C directly on me. I guess she was right.

So, for the medically-inclined DISers, why would something like that cause you to get sick?

I don't think you are sick. You probably just feel bad because of all the dry air you were breathing.

Cold air won't make you feel sick. Except for the sore throat, which COULD be from the dry air, the rest is from a virus. It was a coincidence that you felt this way after sleeping with the air blowing on you. I sleep with a fan blowing on me every night and I feel great the vast majority of days (unless I get the very occasional cold (a couple times a year).

Germs.


As far as I know, germs cause illness.
Other things (a/c or fan blowing on you all night) may compromise your immune system, making it easier for the grems to take hold, but everything I have ever read has pointed to germs as the cause to illness. (common illness like your description - there are other factors in diseases)

PS, I find that the fan or a/c on me overnight causes my throat / sinuses / nose to dry out & that causes a lot of the same symptoms you described. Try a hot steamy shower - works for me!!

When's the last time your A/C filter was changed? You might be allergic to something coming through the A/C. I had this problem for years until I started taking allergy medication.

But for me it didn't matter if I was sleeping, a little after the A/C came on, I'd start getting stuffed up.
