Feeling sick after eating sugar

Hi guys,

I used to be able to eat cakes, cookies, etc and drink pop or juice with no issues. However, in the past year or so, I have been eating less and less, and cut out all pop, juice, and cut back on treats. Now when I do have some I feel really terrible. Shakey, heart racing, slightly nausous, tired and a general blah feeling. I just had my check up and the doc said it is likely just normal aging, but I am having fasting blood sugar to be safe.

Anyone else get this? I am in my mid- 30s

Not from sugar, but a friend gave up all red meat a number of years ago.. Now if she has so much as a bite of red meat, she upchucks and is sick for at least 24 hours..

It could be that your body is just rejecting it now, but I also think you're smart to have the blood tests done..

Hope you can find the answers you're looking for..

Reactive hypoglycemia.

Having the test(s) to rule out diabetes or related issues is good. If it is just reactive hypoglycemia, which is what it sounds like, you would just limit your sugar intake.

It's possible since you cut out so much of that junk food that you eliminated a lot of high fructose corn syrup from your diet without realizing it. I did that last year and very rarely have anything with HFCS in it now. But I experience the same thing - I feel totally gross (headache, naseous, icky feeling) when I DO eat something with it in it, and feel the same way with any artificial sweeteners (nutrasweet, splenda, etc). I'm OK with something that has regular sugar in it, but I can only have a little bit of it.

"normal aging" ? Switch doctors, for sure. No, it's not 'normal' and although it might only mean you are intolerant of high sugar intake, a doctor blowing you off about it is very concerning. I'd worry more about the doctor than the condition.

Cake, cookie, juice etc are just empty calories that'll spike your blood sugar so don't eat them if they don't agree with you. I gave up eating sugar and flour over 2 years ago and honestly don't miss it.

How long after you eat sugary foods do you get these symptoms? I have reactive hypoglycemia, it usually takes 2-4 hours for me to get symptoms if I don't eat anything else. I have also noticed that my tastes have changed dramatically. I don't eat many sweets now, used to put 5 sugars in my coffee, now I'm down to 1/2 a sugar!

If you feel sick after eating sugar, this could mean you have diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition. Consult your doctor. If it is not diabetes it could be reactive hypoglycemia.

That's the new "pat" diagnosis for anyone 40 or over when the doctor isn't interested in taking things one step further.. They hear galloping, they look for horses - if they don't find a horse it never occurs to them that it could be a zebra..

This is very interesting - and the first time I have ever heard of "reactive hypoglycemia".. I wonder if that's why I wake up every morning with my insides shaking like a bowl of jello? It's not a nice feeling at all - pretty much like someone just scared you half to death - or - you just missed being hit head-on by a tractor trailer..

Think I'm going to have to google that.. I'm glad I came back to read some additional responses on this thread..:)

I really think it's just your body saying " stop with the junk food" if you eat junk and aren't used to it, you will feel like junk.

Thanks, I am going for the blood test soon.

For the poster that asked, I don't feel the symptoms 2-4 hours later, I feel it immediately.

For example, if I am at a birthday party and get a piece of cake, I can't finish the piece, because after a few bites I start feeling blah.

I have the same problem with sugar. Also, a little later I get shaky and irritable (well I'm always irritable, but let's say it's the sugar). I was told I had hypoglycemia when I was in my 20's. Now I make sure I eat enough protein and attempt to avoid sugar. Most doctors roll their eyes at hypoglycemia, though, unless it's due to an insulin overdose in a diabetic.

This is what I was thinking, too. Since I cut out practically all sweets, when I do have the occasional treat, I cannot eat nearly as much as I could when I was fat and eating more junk like that more often. My body just doesn't want a huge slab of cake or a big handful of M&Ms anymore.
