Feeling a little nervous about a verandah with kids...

My 11 year old daughter is taller and a lot stronger then me so I have no doubt a 13 year old would be able to open the door. Only you know your children's behaviour do they generally rough house etc at home or are they well behaved children. We were worried on our first cruise when DD was 6 and once on board realized how ridiculous we were as DD isn't a climber etc the railing is higher then an average railing. I have no doubt she would be safe on the verandah now at 11 however I will not be leaving her alone not because she can't manage on her own only because I'm just a crazy over protective mom

There are thousands of kids that stay in verandah rooms every week across the dcl fleet alone.
Then all the other companies.

It would be big news if a kid fell overboard from a verandah. I don't remember hearing about it recently and (personally) ever...

That said, I agree with you that it is very rare. Accidents do happen, but with the thousands of kids on all the different ships each month, I wouldn't hesitate to place a bet that statistics would show that it is infinitely more dangerous just driving to the port.

Not trying to argue, but I do disagree with this statement. One tragic accident on a balcony that got fully reported on. Many more traffic accidents on the way to cruise ships that didn't get reported over the same period because the aren't "news".

Driving is MUCH more dangerous than a veranda rail. But cars are quite safe also, even if there are many more car accidents than railing accidents.

Being too afraid too often has its own risks. Enjoy your cruise!

Driving is MUCH more dangerous than a veranda rail. But cars are quite safe also, even if there are many more car accidents than railing accidents.

I believe that is exactly what I said. You have more risk being injured in a safe car than the possibility of falling over a verandah. Couple that with safe parenting tools and the chance the OP's child will fall off their balcony is miniscule. Enjoy your cruise. I do plan on enjoying ours. We have two aft extended balconies booked (not Disney) and plan to use the balconies extensively with no worry.
