Yes, it's true that lots of people are in over their heads due to lack of financial planning.
I volunteer at a Food Pantry, your friends could go to a nearby pantry for food, even clothing and furniture. Due to the economy, the number of clients at the Pantry have increased, so they are not alone.
I believe all you can do is listen and suggest they find ways (such as free career counseling) through your local agencies to lend them a hand.
