Well that's the idea of the freezer containers or bags if they are in the freezer when you get home you can pop them in the microwave or the oven and it's done. Or take them to lunch the next day or heat in microwave. You will have a home cooked meal anytime you want. What we do here my hubby works very odd hours and when i make dinner i include him if he is not home and doesn't want to eat when he gets home because he grabbed something i put it in the vaccum seal bag and freeze it.
Then when i don't feel like cooking we have all these dinners in the freezer to heat up and cook. And if i know someone is sick and can't cook a meal i bring one over to them and they have one.

I'll give it a try! That certainly cuts down the time I would spend each night cooking.

Anyone have a good Vegetarian Chili recipe? I was going to make one with meat, but DD14 invited her veggie friend over. HELP.

OK maybe I am clueless but do you go to the farmers market daily or every other day to get fresh fruit and veggies ? I WILL NOT take 3 kids and 1 on the way out daily to a place like that or even a store . we go to the farmers market 1 time a week and to the grocery store 1 time every other week and DH stops at Publix for WIC every 4-6 days depending . My point is I can not go get fresh veggies every day or other day .
Sarah

May I ask what WIC is. We do not have Publix here, but I have been in one before and do not recognize what this is?

You guys are an inspiration! I went to Whole Foods yesterday and spent $109 on food that will probably last through Saturday (maybe).

I love what to do with the zucchini.

WIC = Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman Infants and Children.

It's designed for families below a certain income level.

Its a program for women infants and childern . Its for pregnant women or any child under 5 . Its Very hard NOT to get it . In fact I am suppose to get it for both girls and myself and I refussed that much and almost got kicked out of the program .

I beg to differ on that statement. I could not qualify and we were not making alot of money. We were a family of 4 making right around 40,000 a year now we're a family of 6 and make 4x's that so we don't need it but it would've helped a lot then if we had gotten it.

In my state and for my family size (3 people), our household income would have to be UNDER $31,765. I can't even imagine trying to raise a family on that miniscule amount of money.

Our WIC guidelines for a family of 4 are 38,203. It was about the same 10 years ago when I applied.

Well in SC with a family of 5 (almost 6 and yes when your pregnant you count as a family of 6 ) I am not sure what it is but I will say this you guys would be 100% shock over what we raise our almost 4 kids on if you say these amount are nothing to raise a family on . This why I often to say We hvae no choice we HAVE to stay on budget !

Again, this must be different from state to state. Our income can be higher than that, in Kansas, I'm pretty sure.

Also, many people make much less than that, and survive just fine. When we were a family of four, we were living on less than $10,000 a year, because we were both full time students. Nothing but happy memories, no hardship stories here. We even managed small vacations during the summer. You can do a lot with a little money. But that is probably another thread topic.

Here's today's menu...

Breakfast:

cheese omeletes:
eggs - .75
cheese - .50

*1.25

Lunch:

Mcdonalds:
free, my Dad treated me, the kids, my aunt, and my mom. That is very very rare, but, when he offered, how could I say no?

Dinner:

Minestrone
(all guessing on prices here)
broth - 1.80
tomatoes - .30
tomato paste - .10
chick peas - .20
kidney beans - .30
pasta - .50
frozen mixed veggies - .40
(it is suppose to have tomato juice in it too.. but, I forgot to buy some)
parmesan for topping 1.00 (we love our cheese., and will go through a half a can for this soup)
seasoning - .5

*4.60

THis soup makes enough for two meals easily, so, I'll refrigerate the leftovers, and serve it again on Saturday, because I work, and I'll be tired.

Ice cream for dessert. $2 for the tub.. it *should* last more than one meal, but knowing my DH, it won't.

Total: 7.85 :teacher:

This shows how everyone have a diffrent take on whats alot of money . This would be alot in this area .

Sarah

It really does matter on where you live. Here we couldn't make it on $40,000 an year and still it is hard to live now on what we do make. We would love to live somewhere where it was a lower cost of living. You are very lucky in that.

Seniors making under 1200 a month can get wic also.
I liked wic when my kids were smaller when they were on formula. Saved us alot of money. But some things they give you like 10 gallons of milk and 4lbs of cheese was so much for us that we stop buying it then got in trouble for not using it then just stop doing it as soon as little son was off formula because i couldn't see us wasting.

It is a lot in our area too. Our town's median income is about $33,500. The state of Kansas median income is $42,920.

Edit to add: that is household income.

I live in Manhattan, which I think is similar in terms of median HH income. I make roughly that for a single person and with my rent, cable, student loans, credit card, electric and transportation bills I find I have just enough.

Wic when started in 1972 was just to help under nutrition children and pregnant mothers it was actually started to promote breast feeding and feeding kids a balance diet. Before age of 5 children are at the up most dangerous part of development and they found with wic that children who need it and developing better and right on target.
