well last night I went to Ponorosa and I ate like a pig. I gained 2 lbs :rolleyes1 .

No way did you gain 2 lbs in one meal. Do you know how many calories that would be, over what you burn? Surely water retention or your metabolism is really out of whack now! . ;)

all other items were given to us

Okay, since I have such high grocery bills, I need to find the secret to having people give me free food!

I looked it up for you...there are 15 in Maryland. A bunch in Baltimore,District Heights, Dundalk, Edgewood, Essex, Glen Burnie, Hagerstown, Hyattsville, Langley Park, Oxon Hill, Randallstown, and Reisterstown.

Thank you for posting this, Nanu57v.

My dh lives in Glen Burnie and I think I am going to stop by at one and check it out.

Does anyone know of a good Asian/ethnic market in that area, too?

How do I make the cheese grits?

How do I make the cheese grits?

I just make grits according to package directions. When they are done, I turn off the heat and stir in some shredded cheese. That's it. I use whatever cheese I have. DD14 likes American best followed by cheddar.

I am sure this is not the correct "Southern" way of making them, but I'm a NY girl so what do I know?

I'm feeding a family of 5---kids are ds14, dd12 (multiple food allergies), and dd7 (at ballet daycamp this week). Dh almost always packs lunch when he is at the office--he works from home twice a week.

My goal for the rest of this month is to average $12/day on food.

Yesterday's info (Wed 7-11)

Breakfast
toast (end of loaf), cereal, milk guessing at $1.25
(bread comes from Pepperidge Farms outlet)
oj, 1/3 of carton @ $1.98, $0.67
coffee (beans, half&half, sweetener) $0.90

total: $2.32

Lunch

I had leftovers plus some of below
whole wheat tortillas, 3 @ 1.99/pkg of 12 $0.50
corn tortillas, 7 @ $0.03 ea, $0.21
refried beans, $0.50
cheese, 4oz @ $1.00/8oz, $0.50
lettuce from garden FREE
blueberries, half from garden, half from pick-your-own $1.00

total: $2.71

Dinner
turkey burgers, 5 from $5.00/12 box, $2.10
whole wheat buns, 5 from $0.50/12, $0.21
(great sale at the Pepperidge Farms outlet!)
homemade baked beans, $0.35 for dried beans, about $0.25 for other--$0.60

Hubby is leaving for camping tommorrow with the kids and his brother and his family and dad he had me pick up 50pc's of fried chicken from albertsons' he really only wanted 30 but it's much cheaper buying 50 pieces it cost me 24.99 so i took the other 20 and 8 we will have tonight and i froze another 8 for later in the month.
Anyway i took 4 for the chicken breasts shredded them up and will make them chicken wraps for there drive up to the mountains It's really a simple recipe and very inexpensive

Spinach wraps 1. ( sold at the dollar store)
coleslaw veggies in a bag .99 in the produce section
romaine lettuce (free garden)
thin sliced provolone (2.50)
Thousand island dressing (free made it but i know you can get it for 1. at the dollar store.

for 9 people this cost me 4.49 probably cheaper because i didn't use all the cheese. And the wraps come in a package of 12 and the coleslaw veggies there is enough for alot more. Even left over shredded chicken that i'll freeze for soup in the fall.
But what a great summer lunch or dinner.
Does anyone one else have a recipe like this? In fall and winter i have lots of these with soups and stews I have one called Honey lentils that you can eat as a meal or side even the kids will eat this lentil it's so sweet. But it's a hearty dish.

Remember when i made my son grits for the first time. Till this day if his mash potato's don't have lumps in them he won't eat them thinking of grits.
It's a texture and a taste that is required.

You're doing better than me. I'm a southern girl, & have never even tried cheese grits.

You're doing better than me. I'm a southern girl, & have never even tried cheese grits.

I have tried almost everything. I like trying new foods, whether in restaurants or at home. I just like food. All kinds of food.

I remember dragging my mother to a sushi place when I was about 12 (this was 1979 folks-no one had even heard of sushi) and they did not have an English menu or an english speaking waitress. I still remember my fist taste of the mackerel. YUM!

I like trying new things too. My DS & I will always order an item on a menu, if we've never had it before. Oddly, southern (country) cooking is the one type food I have the least interest in exploring. I think it's probably because I grew up around it. I'm just kind of sick of it.
