You guys get such good points offers compared to us in the UK.

That's likely becaue the UK has much lower limits on swipe fees. Frankly, I'd rather have the credit cards skim less of the top of every transaction---a skim which I am paying for, points or no---than to be able to chase rewards.

I did not know that! But a quick google shows US swipe fees are around 7-10x higher.
The UK limit does not apply to AMEX cards here, which is why so many UK merchants will not accept the card for payment… its makes it a PITA trying to use it… even DIsney Cruise Line will not accept Amex from UK guests!

Increasingly, US merchants are adding a fee for using a credit card. Mostly mom-and-pop places, but not always.
