Feb 5th - 12th 2012 Mexican Riviera on the Disney Wonder

Hi All - I can't begin to tell you how excited we are for this trip! I have to admit though, I'm a bit nervous with it being our first cruise but more so, first cruise with young kids! I'm hoping some of you veteran Disney cruisers can ease my anxiety a bit with how wonderful (and safe) you found the kids clubs, general safety etc.

No Worries! Isn't there a Lion King song? Hmmm, Hakuna Mattata?

We went on a cruise with our 1 year old a few years ago. It was on Celebrity, not known for its kids clubs. We had a blast, and were never concerned!

You'll have a blast , and we are here to help.

We're first time cruisers with a 2 year old and everyone has been very helpful. I'm not worried at all. All of my concerns have been put to rest. Disney seems to have thought of most things. Please bring up any concerns you may have, I'm sure we can help put your mind at ease.

Thanks!! Just general questions like how secure the kid's club is, any chance my 3 year old could wander out of the club, letting the club leaders take them from dinner to the club, how high are the railings, anyone ever have their kids experience sea sickness and if so, did you use meds etc...crazy i and i'm quite sure once I get on I'll see how I have very little to worry about but it helps to know others had the same thoughts and minds were put at ease. Can't wait to meet you all! Thanks in advance for your input!

Thanks Brian - you are right, that is my 3 yr old's fav song! I feel better already :)

Kids club is VERY secure, all kids get wrist bands that have little trackers in them, so you could pop into the club (without your little one seeing you) ask one of the cast members at the desk what your child is doing and they can tell you EXACTLY where and what they're doing!! NOT KIDDING! Little baby GPS trackers!! Everytime the child gets checked in/out, they scan their little wristbands, there's locked little gates and they'll never want to leave the club anyway because there's so much going on!:cool1:

You need to remember, this is Disney, they've got this whole kid-friendly environment thing down to a science! No worries, totally safe and you're right, the minute you see how FABULOUS the ship/crew is, you'll be dropping your little darling off and skipping to the nearest bar for a beverage!! :cool1:

I've heard ginger tablets are supposed to help with seasickness, never had to worry with my boys, never had any problems :confused3

I haven't been on board so I can't answer the question about kids wandering off (I think I've read that there is a gate). From photos, and other guests' reports, it sounds like the railings are quite high (higher than a chair back/toddler). I asked our pediatrician about sea sickness and she said that most toddlers do not experience it. You aren't crazy, these are all concerns I had as well (except kids club, but that's only b/c we're not checking her into kids club). Look for us at port! And perhaps, join our fb group https://www.facebook.com/groups/310530365654573/

To add on, the gates are locked unless they buzz you in, and before you leave with child they ID you by both your room key and a secret password. Don't write your password on your room card and you're in really good shape.

Best movie ever!!! ohhh Jake Ryan, I know, you're not into him, seeings how you are a guy, but I know all the girls will agree, Jake Ryan is just dreamy.

Jake Ryan is my boyfriend, back off.

And you're not excited about that or anything are you?;)

PS: Went into our pathetic, little Sephora yesterday, they don't carry the Dior lip stuff I was looking for

Order it online! You still have enough time to get it before then. Or you could just get it at downtown disney...

I've been thinking . . . I know, I know, dangerous! Have a couple of other tips for the newer cruisers.

1 - Have some one dollar bills for the porters at the port and room service if you plan to use it. I haven't been to the west coast port, but at Port Canaveral, you give your bags to porters as soon as you get out of your car/bus/taxi. You don't see these bags until typically 3pm or later. And if you plan on using room service it is expected that you tip the server.

2 - If you are anything like us, we rarely go out to eat. So we really enjoy going to the sit down/full service resturants for breakfast and lunch while on the ship:cool1:. This will be Tritons on the Wonder. On our first cruise we didnt do this much because we didnt understand that there were no extra charges involved. We figured we would have to tip or something. Now we go as often as our schedule will allow.

Okay.Im kinda clueless so bear with me.:confused3

I know that for dinner we have the rotation but for breakfast and lunch can we eat anywhere we want except Palo??

One more thing....Do I have to book that crown paradise something or another in advance???
:confused3

23 days .....23 days......(starting tomorrow):cheer2:

You are correct.
Breakfast options will be:

1- Buffet up on deck 9, Beach Blanket Buffet(BBB)
2- Buffet at Parrot Cay deck 3(I think), you sit inside, have a server bring drinks to you, but you get up yourself to get food.
3- Sit down, order off menu at Tritons. Sometimes this will be a brunch
Always check hours in navigator
4- smoothies, fruit, muffins at Goofys deck 9 by the Mickey pool

Lunch

1- BBB
2- Tritons
3- Fast food items on pool deck 9. This is where you will find your burgers, chicken fingers, hot dogs, fries, etc (Plutos), pizza (Pinocchios), and sandwiches, wraps, fruit, salads, ice cream (Goofys)

Of course room service is always available (Mickey ice cream bars and milk and cookies before bed!!)

Not sure what you are refering to with the crowne paradise :confused3 All above are just walk in and eat!

Almost forgot, QotD.......

We will be at GCV on Fri 2/3. Planning on going into the parks on Saturday the 4th. Sunday post cruise, we have plans with some SoCal friends, then back in the parks on Mon and Tues before heading home Tues evening.

Im not sure...we are doing the same, and i figured i would just call them like a week before to see whats up.

OK folks! I FINALLY got a response from DCL about the sailing away party!! Here's what I wrote:

I just wanted to ask what is the protocol for the Sail Away Party, when
it is Super Bowl Sunday? I will be traveling on February 5th on the 7
night, Mexican Riviera cruise, on the Wonder. I have heard various
rumors, board postings and recounts of other travelers that on Super
Bowl Sunday, the Sail Away party is cancelled, due to the game. I have
heard the Sail Away party, as well as the safety drill is postponed
until the following morning.
Here are my concerns:

1. I understand the ship will be in international waters and there
might be challenges receiving a signal. Considering the game starts at
3:00 PST and the ship doesn't depart until 5:00, losing the signal to
international waters will likely not happen until after the game is
over.

2. I understand the Super Bowl will be played in all sports bars, like
Diversions, as it should be. My concern is, will the game be played on
the large screen on the deck where the Sail Away party usually takes
place? If so, will the game be turned off to accommodate the Sail Away
party?

3. I understand that the Personal Navigator and all Cast Members will
provide me with any and all information regarding this issue, but
considering DCL has departed on Super Bowl Sunday MANY times before, I'm
assuming there is a protocol and plan on what the schedule is, I would
just like a heads up, so not to get my kids excited about the Sail Away
party if it's not going to happen.

Thanks so much for your help and information. We're SO looking forward
to this sailing and hope we have the Sail Away party to look forward
to!! It was one of the highlights of our last cruise with Disney!

I went off of the other replies y'all got, didn't give them much room for a canned answer. Here's their reply:

Thank you for choosing a Disney Cruise Line vacation!

I would be happy to assist you.

In order to provide an accurate response to your email message regarding
Super Bowl Sunday on the ship, we need to conduct additional research.

We appreciate your patience while we process your request and look
forward to contacting you shortly.

I hope this information has been helpful. If you require further
assistance in planning your visit, please feel free to contact us.

We look forward to sailing with you!

Have a Magical Day!

Wilma

Poor Wilma! Didn't know what she was getting into when she opened MY e-mail!! Looking forward to getting an answer!! I'll keep you posted!!

Holy Mouse Ears, Krilper! You rocked that letter! You are right, poor Wilma! Great job! I'm hiring you in the future!

Guess who is off today!!!  :dance3: :dance3: :yay: :yay: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Hope you enjoyed your day off! Lisa said she didn't shop at ATL. Hmm. Maybe you saw us at a restaurant! I bet you and Lisa have friends in common. We still haven't spoken. Will do so tomorrow. Did you ever go to Delusso Coffee shops?

I think it is at the Plaza Inn where it has always been, not the new Jolly Holiday Cafe (though it is adorable too). Ariel's Grotto ressies are totally worth it! We did it and arrived with less than the recommended time to spare, we were still standing with an unobstructed view. We were center on a tier up with a planter in front of us. There wasn't anyone for another 3 yards. The picnic seating is different and the line much longer, but better than nothing. If you want to get the fastpasses yourself, it is across from the Grand Californian, next to the rapids ride.

Apologies to the first time visitors, but California Adventure is a MESS right now. Don't hop too much. Getting in and out is a wee bit of a nightmare, you feel like salmon swimming upstream. Give yourself plenty of time if you're trying to catch a show. This is especially true for Aladdin. You can't enter the gates and go straight there. You're going to be forced over to Soaring over California and then you'll have to walk the length of the park in the opposite direction. As for Disneyland, several of the shops on the left side (Candy Palace, Nickel Arcade, Carnation Cafe, Blue Ribbon Bakery, Coke Corner, Gibson Girl) are all down for renovations, possibly till the summer. They're getting ride of Blue Ribbon and giving Carnation back their indoor seating. Gibson Girl is getting more seating too. Candy Palace will have additional space for viewing candy making.

Definitely check out Carnation Plaza Inn (especially during Friday/Saturday night swing dance parties). There are photos of Walt dancing there back in the day. Sadly, they intend on tearing up this charming part of the park to turn it into a Princess monstrosity that they'll regret in 10 years and tear out again (I would compare this mistake to the one of tearing out people mover and Mary Blair murals). They claim it is for progress right now, but take a look at the diagrams and you'd cringe. It is so sadly cheese-ey! And this is coming from a princess lover with a two year old daughter!

On happier notes, get yourself first time visitor buttons, makes your visit extra special. Or a button fairy pixiedust: just might try to snag them for you and deliver them in your fish extender. There's a secret spot to view Fantasmic from behind a large lighting structure that will move upwards immediately prior to the show (thus giving you quite the view). Personally, I would recommend you find a spot on the bridge. It is far away, but I find the slightly aerial view more enjoyable. Added plus, you don't get wet! Just get a spot near a railing and you're unobstructed. Watch out for trees though. Also, check the Calendar. Fantasmic is going down for maintenance but I can't remember when. If you want to go to Blue Bayou, make the reservation now or go at lunch on a weekday. Cafe Orleans is very good and cheaper. Napa Rose is the best, order a glass of Magicale. It is so good, it can sell out. Personally, I discourage people from eating in Tomorrowland (I find most of their food over priced and very theme park quality). There is legitimately good food in the park.

Wow! Great insight and info PrincessSophiesMom! Thank you! Kripler's family and my family are going for just one day following the cruise. I've been going to DL all my life and apparently I don't know anything! Great info!!!

Crowd index for the week before and after. This is from touring plans, I paid and joined last year. Really cool, and pretty spot on. Higher the number, the more crowded. 12th, 13th and 14th will be great days to go! The 15th and 16th are the best days all year, without a doubt, there would be hardly any waits... Oh man, I may get a pass and come back!!!

How do you guys know about this stuff? This is amazing! Thanks for sharing!!

Hi there and welcome! I haven't been on a Disney cruise in seven years. Our kids were four when we went. We were in the Caribbean on the Magic. I was nervous, too, but not after the cruise started. Everything was fabulous, kids loved the club, no complaints. There are others on this board that probably have more info, but as for us, we were very happy. This is a whole new ballgame for us this time with two 11 year-olds. They'll be in a different "club". See you soon! Lisa

I had all the same worries as you do! I think others have answered more fully than I would be able to. Trying to remember seven years ago is proving to be difficult! Lisa
