We would like to participate in FE. I found our group on FB and sent a request to be added to the list so I think that's all set.
What kind of gifts do people give?
Is it one gift per room or per person?
I keep finding personalized gifts is this the norm or do most people go more basic?
Our group will have a maximum of 10 other rooms to exchange w/ so I'm trying to figure out if it's 10 gifts I should get or 10x the number of people in the room.
TIA for any advice!

Each Fish Extender group sets it's own "rules", if there are any. You'd have to talk to the people there whether they have any.

Typically, for FE groups here on DISboards, gift exchanges are "at least one gift per room". But people can give individual gifts, if they wish, or one gift for adults, and separate ones for kids. Usually only once per cruise, but some people gift more than once. Whether they are personalized or not is up to the giver, we've gotten both personalized stuff as well as non-personalized stuff.

We've done bookmarks, magnets, candy and little things. We've also bought Disney paper bowls and ice cream sprinkles/sundae toppings. One cruise we received hand carved Mickey head cutting boards, every time I pull it out to use it I think of that cruise, it's a great reminder

I've only done it once (only cruised DCL once). I prepared generic gifts for the adults (essential kit) and the older kids (nail polish for girls, movie treats for boys). Only for the younger kids I had personalized little totes for them (very easy to make.. got the totes at dollar store and bought iron-on-transfer paper).

As for the gifts we received, nothing was "personalized" but there's absolutely nothing wrong with that :) I loved all the gifts and some of the most useful stuff were what people consider store-bought and ordinary. Have fun and don't stress out about what to get!

We've done the FE once and are looking to do it again on our second cruise. On our first cruise we received a variety of items (Kleenex, lipsticks, magnets, character tights for the kids, mini scrapbook, ornament, candy, keychain, mini bottle of alcohol). Some families chose to give one gift per stateroom, but most gave individual items to each person in the room.

How do you get the little mini bottles of alcohol on the ship? wanted to use them for FEs but can you bring them onboard? In your suitcase??

You can't. The alcohol policy does not allow any hard liquor to be brought onboard. Only wine or beer. And only 2 bottles per person, at any rate.
