FDNY EMS Win a Gold Medal in an International Competition
FDNY EMS members took home the gold medal at the 2006 International Journal of Emergency Medical Service (JEMS) Games at the EMS Today conference in Baltimore, Maryland on March 25.
The team, which included Paramedic James Faller, Paramedic Joseph Hudak and EMT Joseph Fortis, as well as alternate Paramedic Donald Hudson, blew away the competition in the annual event.
Thirteen teams from around the world participated in the Games, and were judged based on their performance of pre-hospital assessment skills and treatment delivered to simulated patients, as well as on their proficiency and speediness.
Its an honor to win, said team leader, Paramedic Faller. But the people who really win in this competition are our patients. You come out of the experience knowing new ways to handle situations when they happen in real life.
This years challenges included everything from administering CPR to rescuing and treating victims of a simulated helicopter crash.
The FDNY EMS team said that their communication skills and cooperation put them over the top.
All FDNY members should be proud of their performance, said Chief of EMS John Peruggia. The team did an outstanding job and demonstrated true professionalism.
For their win, the members received $5,000 in medical training equipment, as well as a $1,000 check, which they said they plan on donating to a worthy cause.
