To get the FD, doesn't one have to stay 5 nights? If so, how can I do this with a split stay?

FD requires a minimum 3 night stay, room at rack rate and 2 day tickets for everyone 3 years or older in the room. When Disney announces a special offer it usually includes an example of a 4-5-6 night booking. For a split stay it is better to choose FD for one resort stay and a room only and pay OOP for food for the other because Disney doesn't recognize split stays and considers each booking as separate. So if you want FD on both it would require a second set of tickets for everyone.

This is correct. I also wanted to add that sometimes there is a room discount offered the same time as FD, so depending on availability (and if one is offered), you could use the room discount on the second resort since it would be a separate reservation.

For split stays, do you have to switch resorts? For instance, if you could do 2 nights with a room discount, followed by 4 nights of free dining, 2 separate reservations...would you need to switch to a different resort or could you (if there is availability at the resort) stay at the same resort. And if so, has anyone done this and been able to just remain in the same room?

You do not have to change resorts for a split stay and you can book RO with a discount for any nights prior to the start of a package (pending availability). As long as you book the same room type as your FD package, you can have the reservations linked and put a request to keep the same room. When you check in for the RO reservation, tell the CM you have a continuing reservation and would like to keep the same room if possible. Not having to move is just a request and is not guaranteed, but Disney will do everything they can to accommodate that request.
