If your checking in a couple days before FD is offered and the week before is completely blacked out, doing a split stay would make sense right? Pay for those couple days, then book the rest of your stay under free dining???

Just remember that FD is a package and you'll be required to purchase at least a 2 day ticket for each Guest when that package starts. If you are coming in prior to that date, then you'll need to decide what kind of ticket to purchase if you want to visit the parks before the FD check in and if it's worth it to have to buy two different types of tix. You can always save the 2-day ones if you don't use them as they won't expire until 14 days after first use.

OP I did this. I checked in the day before free dining started. We checked out the next morning (from all star music) walked over to all star movies and checked in for our package. We didn't need to pick up the tickets from our package early but that can be done up to 3 days before the package starts. We were excited though to start using our dining credits when we checked in at all star movies! The only thing I would do differently would be to stay at the same resort and try to get the same room so that I could have unpacked that first day.

There is no need to buy tickets twice unless you are checking in several days earlier. Up to three days early they'll give you the tickets from your package.
