FBI looking into possible Va. voter intimidation

If you can't win, cheat, the motto of this current GOP party. (And yes, I know, the Dems have done it in the past, blah blah blah, but they're not the ones cheating right now...)

If you can't win, accuse the other side of cheating. Whoever is in power is the cheater, whoever is trying to get power is the accuser.

Election fixing charges fly in Utah county
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Voting appears to be very popular in Daggett County, Utah.

Daggett County has registered 947 voters for Tuesday's election. According to the most recent Census figures, that's four more than the county's population in 2005.

A spokesman for Attorney General Mark Shurtleff says complaints of vote-stuffing in the county are being investigated. Democrats suspect County Clerk Vickie McKee is letting outsiders swell the Daggett County registration rolls to give Republicans an advantage. The Democrats also say the father of a Republican deputy running for sheriff has 14 adults registered at his household. McKee hasn't responded to messages from The Associated Press.

It's sad, but cheating can be a multi-faceted problem. Not only could one possibly cheat for themself, or have some misquided individual (or party) cheat for them, or have someone else (or party) make it look like the individual cheated, or someone could have made the whole thing up...

Don't be the first one to cast the stone...

Exactly. It's so easy to accuse someone, or party, of cheating. So why don't we wait until we find out for sure what's going on before throwing rocks.

Jean Jensen, Secretary of the Virginia State Board of Elections, confirms that the FBI is now looking into possible voter intimidation in the US Senate race between Republican incumbent George Allen and Democrat Jim Webb. Jensen says state officials alerted the Justice Department yesterday to several complaints of suspicious phone calls to voters that attempted to misdirect or confuse them about election day. She adds she has now been contacted by FBI agents. The FBI in Richmond refuses to comment.

In a written statement issued by the Webb campaign, state Democratic party counsel Jay Myerson says he believes that Republicans are behind an orchestrated effort to suppress votes for Webb. Republican officials, including the executive director of the Virginia Republican party, say the GOP and the Allen campaign are focused on mobilizing voters and have not discouraged anyone from voting.
The GOP has a history of voter suppression.

The GOP has a history of voter suppression.

And the Democratic party has a history of vote manipulation. Dead people voting in Chicago and Democratic workers handing out cash in Essex cty NJ in 2004 spring to mind. Nobody's innocent in this one, guys.

Lets not forget the GOP's latest dirty trick. http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/001949.php
Two high-ranking Democrats are asking the Justice Department, the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Election Commission to investigate harrassing GOP robo calls we've been reporting on.....

Dear Chairmen Martin, Toner and Attorney General Gonzales:

We write to demand an immediate investigation concerning allegations of unethical and possibly illegal prerecorded phone calls designed to confuse voters in Tuesday’s election. These misleading calls are made late in the evening, or during the night, in an effort to generate anger at the Democratic candidate, who is in no way associated with this harassment. In fact, the calls are being funded by the National Republican Campaign Committee, which has reportedly provided $600,000 to fund this deception.

There have been numerous media reports about these calls, which appear to be occurring in dozens of districts. It is also our understanding that the Republican Party has been forced to stop the calls in New Hampshire.

According to the Associated Press, one individual “received three prerecorded messages in four hours. Each began, ‘Hello, I’m calling with information about [Democratic candidate] Lois Murphy [in the Philadelphia area].’” The Philadelphia Daily News reported that “[t]he calls, which begin by offering ‘important information about Lois Murphy,’ are designed to mislead voters into thinking the message is from her.”

The New Hampshire Union Leader reported that a “national Republican group yesterday scuttled a pre-recorded phone call effort the state Attorney General’s Office said may have violated New Hampshire law by contacting residents listed on the federal Do Not Call registry

In Illinois, The Barrington Courier-Review reported that a resident received the following phone call – “Hi. I’m calling with information about [Democratic Candidate] Melissa Bean.” She received the same call a total of 21 times since October 24. Others reported receiving the same calls, none of which were paid for by Ms. Bean or any Democratic group.

If true, these allegations could violate a number of federal laws and legal requirements. Among other things, 47 CFR 1200 (b)(1) provides that prerecorded telephone messages must “[a]t the beginning of the message, state clearly the identity of the business, individual, or other entity that is responsible for initiating the call.” Section 441h of the Federal Election Campaign Act provides that no agent of a federal candidate shall “fraudulently misrepresent himself or any committee or organization under his control as speaking or otherwise writing or acting for or behalf of any other candidate or political party.” Section 441d(d)(2) specifies that communications must provide a statement as to the party responsible for it, and the campaign finance laws generally prohibit fraudulent and deceptive activities. A number of state laws also appear to be applicable, such as New Hampshire’s which prohibits calls to individuals on the federal Do Not Call registry.

Given the magnitude and seriousness of these charges, we ask that you immediately investigate and take action to protect the integrity of our electoral process and hold the culpable parties responsible.

Sincerely,

John Conyers, Jr.
John Dingell

msnbc is reporting that people are beng turned away in utah and that there are issues in ohio
va
and several other states

Good grief... :guilty: We are such a nation of complainers. :guilty: Many of the reports I have read are people saying basically that they had to wait in line to vote, or that a machine was down and some folks had to use paper ballots. I have a bright idea... if the line is too long come back later! or vote in advance! or wait! :sad2: How in the world inconvenience and perhaps poor planning at some precint level translates into Republican (or Democratic) conspiracy is beyond me :sad2: . Sometimes I think we Americans are too whiny and stupid to vote.

hey no one should be turned away and thats being reported
its wrong
its really sad htat in this day and age we have to WORRY about our own elections being FAIR and HONEST
if you dont really believe cheating happens then turn on the news

If I trust people and computers with such matters as my money, air transportation, surgery, and nuclear weapons, I have no trouble trusting them with handling and monitoring elections. The only "problem" is there is no IQ test required to vote. I say that in quotation marks because I wouldn't have it any other way.

All this enforces the issue that voters should be required to show a form of ID when registering to vote and when voting. We are required to show ID when we write checks, use our credit cards, check into a hotel/motel, fly on a plane, drive a car...etc., etc.,etc.,... Why should voting be any different? As for intimidating voters...do you feel intimidated when you have to show your ID when you do these other things? I believe any form of intimidation should definately be reported...but asking for an ID when registering to vote or when voting is not a form of intimidation!

All this enforces the issue that voters should be required to show a form of ID when registering to vote and when voting.

I've always thought that was odd. I have to sign something, but that's it. If my name had not already been in the register, would they have not allowed me to vote or given me a provisional? Then who decides if the provisional is accepted or not? According to the sentiment, if I vote democrat it will get thrown out! :rotfl:

I've read the CNN/MSNBC accounts and what is being reported is FAR from true fraud. I'm waiting to hear from my friend in Bayonne to see if the Dems are handing out cash yet. He got paid to vote in 2004.
