FB scam alert involving Disney.

My friends are constantly falling for these "contests". I just politely let them know I "think" it's a scam and go on with life. There's not much I can do about it.

if you look at the Facebook page that was linked, there is a hyphen in "Disney-World" AND a period after. Plus, it looks as though it was started yesterday. That's a classic scam page.

It is true, you can tell someone it's a scam, but you can't make them believe you. And if they won't, there's nothing you can do about it other than reporting the page to Facebook.

I see this a lot. I really don't understand why people put fake sweeps out there. Who benefits? I guess I am just naive! And I post on my friends "share" that this is scam, and I setting my account up for these people too?

Because they get lots of possible targets. And as noted, they can select some targets to follow up on - either by asking them to provide their personal information to claim a prize, or informing them that they need to send money somewhere to claim their prize. How many of the 17,000 plus persons who liked that page will respond? How many of them, upon believing that the dream is within their grasp, would gladly wire $200-$300 somewhere to pay the "taxes" on their prize? Possibly enough for the scammers to benefit.

All of Facebook is a scam. People who use that site deserve it.

Millions of people use Facebook. I use it to keep in touch with friends and family who are far away and to see photos of them. I am sure many others do as well. I don't consider it a scam and I don't think I or anyone else who uses it legitimately deserves to be scammed either.

There's 2 of those contest pages now! Disney World. and Disney-World. My friend "shared" both on her page and said she hopes she wins! I feel bad - I wonder if I should tell her their not real?

I would alert her at the very least to be cautious if she is asked to send money or personal information to claim a prize.

I think the above comments are just rude, nasty and uncalled for. From "being lazy" to "deserving to be scammed" and "gullible" - wow. judgmental much? Truly hope none of you or your family members get scammed whether by phone, online or otherwise.

if my family member gets scammed from something this obvious, then i agree, they are "lazy" "deserving" and "gullible"

Not everyone has the same level of internet savvy. I just report pages like this, and if anyone I know shares something like this, I tactfully try to let them know it's a scam. Hopefully FB will shut it down soon. :(

Tell people to look for the blue check mark indicating Facebook has verified the page as authentic.

I have a feeling that the Disney lawyers will be contacting Facebook any minute now...

So my mother did not really take her dog for a walk and go grocery shopping at 7am today?
The point is, that if there's no cost to using a site on the internet, then YOU, not the site, are the actual product.

Advertisers pay FB to get (a) your demographics and (b) access to your attention.

Same with Google and so many other data sources today. Essentially, if you use the internet, your data is "for sale", and likely from large companies that you "trust".

As for scams - in order for them to work you need a populace that is either greedy, desperate or naïve. The young and old are easy prey, and always have been, but the internet has made it more difficult for even the wise to protect themselves. Things like ransomware (google it if you have not heard of the threat) are spreading like wildfire and becoming more sophisticated every day. Get a ransonware infection? You had better hope that you have your pictures backed up somewhere protected or it may cost you thousands of dollars to get them back.
