We are a family of 5 staying at Desert Inn and Suites and planning to eat most suppers at local restaurants to keep in budget. Where is your favorite offsite place for a family? We will have a car and are willing to drive. Probably planning at least 1 fast food and 1 pizza night.

Definitely In N Out for fast food. Javier's Crystal Cove for a sit down dinner (Newport Beach). We don't do chains, but I have no problem making the exception for In n Out!

I will also be staying at DI&S and some of my favorite are:
Pizza Press (very close)
Subway (tastes good after burgers and such) and is right down the road
Bubba Gumps (in garden walk and I love seafood)
Joe's crab shack (need to drive but its only a mile or so, great sea food)

Glad to hear Subway is close. It's one place we can all agree on. Checking out the crab shack now.

Please do yourself a favor and DON'T eat at Joe's Crab Shack or Bubba Gump. They're nationwide chains, and you're on vacation where you can eat almost anywhere, especially great locally owned businesses. (not to mention they're really not that good).

Oh this is so true. Eat someplace a bit special (unless you like shrimp with the consistency of chicken, then Bubba's is great).

I suggest Ralph Brennan's' Jazz kitchen, Naples Ristorante or Tortilla Joe's for Mexican food.

This is about a 10 min drive away, but we went to the Anaheim Packing House the other night and ate at the Kettlebar Steam Restaurant. Absolutely amazing. The packing house was really cool - lots of options. If you have a car and want offsite, this seemed like an awesome option (crepes and ice cream places too!)
(We had Tortilla Jo's the first night in DTD and it was good too)

another vote for Pizza Press, especially if you like craft beer

They may be chains but they aren't anywhere near me, so they would be special. Same as PF Changs, there are none around where I live so only get to go when I am at Disneyland.

That's our situation as well :) Olive Garden is downright exotic when you live in Canada.

I completely get this!

We don't have Dennys or Ihop in Australia so it's somewhere we make a point of going when we visit. Even a trip to McDonalds is exciting as you guys have different things on your menu. The thought of going to a Walmart is enough to get these Aussies jumping up and down with excitement!

Not sure if this is your thing, but the thing i miss most about southern California is the Asian food. Specifically in that area, Vietnamese food in Westminster and Korean food in Garden Grove.

I used to like a place called Lite Town House in Garden Grove for Korean BBQ. Not sure if it's still there or not, I heard it may have moved to Irvine. But there were lots of other good places there.

Vietnamese restaurants tend to be more hole in the wall places, but you can't beat the pho in Westminster.

Edit: there's a fast food chain called Lee's Sandwiches which serves Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches, there's probably a bunch around there.

For Vietnamese sandwiches: OC Rotisserie Chicken on Ball (behind the car wash). Super budget friendly
50's diner: Ruby's on Lincoln (our kids love Ruby's!)
Breakfast: Original Pancake House on Lincoln (open until 2pm, I think)
Pizza and Red Sauce Italian: Marri's on Katella, generous pizzas
