DS5 is getting my old iphone as a christmas gift this year from Santa (I already bought an otterbox for it so he will never know it is my old phone!). It will basically be an ipod Touch since the calling features will be turned off. I'm in the process right now of cleaning off all my old apps and stuff and I would like to load it up with things he will enjoy. I have a few apps on my new phone for him, but since the old one is now going to be just his I am sure he will want a lot more.

So, what are your kids favorite apps? We have the basics like angry birds, talking tom, etc.

ETA: We are also getting an ipad as a family gift from my parents so any ipad apps would be great as well. I probably would be interested in some more "educational" ones for the ipad for him.

Just a FYI, you can easily sell old iPhones for $200, $300, or more. Amazon has a straight-forward buy back program, or if you want more cash you can go the eBay or Craigslist route. Just a thought, since you could take that money and buy him a new iPod touch with it. (Which in turn would have a newer battery and warranty.)

Here's a list of the ones I have on my phone for my DD. Some of these might be a little young for a 5 year old boy though. NumbersFree, Peekaboo HD, ABC Lite, Binky Free, ABCLite, Funnimals, KidsSongs, iWW Lite, StoryChimes books (lots of different titles), Cat Lite, etc. All of these were free, and some have a pay version that you can also download if you find you like it.

Some games that I like, that a 5 year old would probably like too: Paper Toss, Can Knockdown, Kickoff, Pinball, Monkey Kick, Mega Jump, Air Hockey, etc.

I agree with the previous poster. See if you can sell the iphone and get a real iPod touch with the proceeds. Exchange the Otterbox case for one for a Touch.

Thanks for the advice, but my phone is only worth about $130 on the resale market so not really worth it to upgrade to a new itouch (as I would be out at least $50 more for a new one or would get a refurbished which I basically already have. For a $10 otterbox case (awesome deal on Amazon) and a few dollars worth of apps he will have a great xmas gift and not cost me a lot of money for technology he doesn't really need. He is only 5...just looking for something to keep him off my iphone for the next year or two until he is ready for the next "new" thing.

I second Sneezies. My YDS also likes Cut the Rope, Doodle Glow (or something to that effect), Finger Scan...no idea why.

Talking Tom is flat out annoying, but he likes it. He also likes Talking John (bacteria) which I find less annoying.

Where's my Water...fun for me but my grandkids (7 and 5) LOVE it too.

I recently found 4 free Hallmark apps; they are adorable! We have Jingle, the interactive dog that barks when you read the story, and these apps read the story, plus have cute mini games and/or puzzles. I really like Jingle and bought his new book... the apps all a commercial for Hallmark, of course, but they are sweet.

Also, my kids love glow draw, Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Cover Orange, Coin Drop, Tap the Frog, Lego Match Card game, and Stack the States... they are 5 and 6 and know and recognize half of the states because of that app. My son also likes the Ice Age game and Angry Birds; he also got sucked into Tap Zoo, Pet Hotel, etc. over the summer, but has thankfully lost interest, although he's well into level 25+ on those apps.

Thanks guys. A lot of these sound great! Off to visit the app store!

My son likes Doodle Buddy, Angry Birds (I did spring for the 99c version since he plays it so much), Scoops & Angry Birds Rio

My DD likes a lot of the coloring apps like Glow Coloring, Touch N Color, and Coloring. She also loves Labyrinth (marble game).

Fingerpaint
Baby Scratch
Lite Brite
ShapeBuilder (both my girls LOVE this)
Toddler ABC
Color&Draw
Speak, Piggy!
My Very First App
Baby Touch Peekaboo
My First Words
My First Sentences
Preschool Memory Match
Park Math (LOVE THIS ONE)
ClockMaster
Cat Piano Jr.
Sea Math
Slice It
Tiny Wings
Hatch!
Farm Flip
Kid Klok

Can you tell my kids play our ipods/iphones a lot? ;)

Thanks guys, you are awesome. I literally have a list a mile long to check out!

I am surprised no one mentioned my sons favorite apps yet that we already have...so to help anyone else out they are:
Talking Tom
Excuse Me (yes, this is completely inappropriate, but he loves it)
Holiday Bells
More Cookies!
Cupcakes!
Angry Birds
Skee-Ball
Paper Toss
Nanosaur 2

The cookie and cupcake ones are so dumb, but he will play with them for a LONG time. Another friend had it on her ipad and her kids were enthralled by it too :confused3
