I was just listening to Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" about a man deep in despair...I love that song! What are some of your favorite songs that touch your melancholy side?

I don't know if it is depressing to others, but "Cat's in the Cradle" can almost always bring tears to my eyes

from tarzan I think.....You'll be in my heart.....and we used to hear it after our dalmatian passed away......we would just cry when we would hear this......guess it is way to emotional.....

There’s one I often hear on the oldies’ station, but I have no idea of the exact title or who sings it: “Where, oh where can my baby be…the Lord took her away from me…she’s gone to Heaven so I’ve got to be good.…

Personally I don't see Dont give up as depressing. that is one of my favorite songs, and I hear despair/but hope/encouragement in there as well.. listen to the wonderful words of Kate Bush.. in her solo...

Now if you think that is depressing, you've never heard any Cure, Smiths, or Bauhaus Songs... talk about depressing..

Here's one of the Smiths...

The title of the song is... the humdinger of all depressing song titles...

Heaven knows I'm miserable now..

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
but heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
and heaven knows I'm miserable now

In my life
why do I give valuable time
to people who don't care if I live or die

Two lovers entwined pass me by
and heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
and heaven knows I'm miserable now

In my life
why do I give valuable time
to people who don't care if I live or die

What she asked of me at the end of the day
Caligula would have blushed
"You've been the house too long" she said
and I naturally fled

In my life
why do I smile
at people who I'd much rather kick in the eye

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
but heaven knows I'm miserable now
"You've been the house too long" she said
and I naturally fled

In my life
why do I give valuable time
to people who don't care if I live or die

Lets just keep those cheery hits coming...

;) Personally I'm a big Smiths songs.. but sometimes I just have to not listen to them!

Yes, you are right Cindy B, there is hope in that song, another reason I love it. But for anyone that has felt the anguish, too...

'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing
that river's flowing

--Peter Gabriel

See, I dont even see those lines as depressing ... I"ve heard that interpretation that the man is on the bridge thinking of jumping..

I see that the river is there, always moving, always changing, never stopping.. continuing on...

Here is one of my most depressing Peter Gabriel songs, Its on Peter Gabriel self titled 1. (melting face one)

Biko
September '77
Port Elizabeth weather fine
It was business as usual
In police room 619
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

When I try to sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

You can blow out a candle
But you can't blow out a fire
Once the flames begin to catch
The wind will blow it higher
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

And the eyes of the world are
watching now
watching now

Here's a short bio of Biko...

Biko, Stephen (Bantu) (1946-77)
South African political activist, founder and leader of the Black Consciousness Movement, born Kinwilliamstwon, Cape Province. He became involved in politics while studying medicine at Natal University, and was one of teh founders (and first president) of the all-black South African Students Organization (1969). In 1972 he became honorary president of the Black People's Convention, a coalition of over 70 black organizations. The following year he was served with a banning order severely restricting his movements and freedom of speech and association, and in 1975 the restrictions were increased. He was detained four times in the last few years of his life, and died in police custody, allegedly as a result of beatings received. He was the subject of a film made by Richard Attenborough (Cry Freedom , 1987).

I just finished listening to one of my all time favorite depressing songs! :p LOL! I was playing cards with my mom and cued up music from 1971 -1978 on my CD player. This just happened to be the last song I heard! :p

Linda Ronstadt's version of JD Souther's Silver Blue

Silver Blue
Said goodbye to no one
Thought it through
And left me standing in the road

If you were ever lonely
It never showed
But someday baby you'll be here
And I'll be going home
Without you
With blood on both my hands
'Cause I took you through
And now we're both too weak to stand

You think you're gonna live forever
And somehow find me there
But you'll be wearing golden wings
And fall right through the air

Loving you
Well I'm a fool for trying
'Cause I get so blue
That I don't know
Lord I'm crying
If you are ever lonely
And you let me know
I'll come running right on time
and rock you gently home

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Denise < --- sorry, but remembers LMAO at comedian Richard Jeni who once said that if you want to get rid of unwanted party guests, just play this Gordon Lightfoot song. Guaranteed to empty out the room.

Seasons In The Sun
( Terry Jacks )

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and A B C's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......

Goodbye Papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along.

Goodbye Papa its hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them I'll be there.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone.

Goodbye Michelle my little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.

Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone

All our lives we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun

Heaven knows I'm miserable now..

OMG! I LOVE the Smiths!

Another one I like by them is "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" and "How Soon Is Now?"

Another sad one: "Candle In The Wind", either version.

Two of my all time favorite depressing songs, from one artist, Jackson Browne :) LOL! I need to find a fluff thread now, I'm getting depressed. :p

These Days by Jackson Browne
Well I've been out walking
I don't do that much talking these days
These days--
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
For you
And all the times I had the chance to

And I had a lover
It's so hard to risk another these days
These days--
Now if I seem to be afraid
To live the life I have made in song
Well it's just that I've been losing so long

I'll keep on moving
Things are bound to be improving these days
These days--
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten, my friend
Don't confront me with my failures
I have not forgotten them

Sleeps Dark and Silent Gate by Jackson Browne
Sometimes I lie awake at night and wonder
Where my life will lead me
Waiting to pass under Sleep's dark and silent gate

I found my love too late
Running around day after day
Looking for the time to play
While my old friends slipped away

Never should have had to try so hard
To make a love work out, I guess
I don't know what love has got to do with happiness
But the times when we were happy
Were the times we never tried

Sitting down by the highway
Looking down the road
Waiting for a ride
I don't know where I've been
Wishing I could fly away
Don't know where I'm going
Wishing I could hide
Oh God this is some shape I'm in
When the only thing that makes me cry
Is the kindness in my baby's eyes

Sometimes I lie awake at night and wonder
Where the years have gone
They have all passed under
Sleep's dark and silent gate

Yes, I was just re reading some of the lyrics.. (most of my Smiths stuff are on cassette!)

Yes, I tried to find a cherry Smiths song... the closest one I could fine that is "cherry", was Girlfriend in a Coma, and Paint a Vulgar Picture.

Meat is Murder is definetley depressing as well... so depressing I couldn't even post it...

There's a Joe Jackson song called Real Men... can't post that either, but that is a powerfully depressing song as well... you will have to look up the lyrics yourself.

I have a hard time with Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven, there are others that I can think of right now.

OK, I have officially hijacked this depressing song thread...

Here's another one of my favorites... I seem to really enjoy depressing songs...

The Last Day of our Acquaintance... Sinead O Connor (this is beautifully composed with acoustic guitar)

THE LAST DAY OF OUR ACQUAINTANCE
(Sinead O'Connor)

This is the last day of our acquaintance
I will meet you later in somebody's office
I'll talk but you won't listen to me
I know what your answer will be

I know you don't love me anymore
You used to hold my hand when the plane took off
Two years ago there just seemed so much more
And I don't know what happened to our love

Today's the day
Our friendship has been stale
And we will meet later to finalise the details
Two years ago the seed was planted
And since then you have taken me for granted

But this is the last day of our acquaintance
I will meet you later in somebody's office
I'll talk but you won't listen to me
I know your answer already

But this is the last day of our acquaintance
I will meet you later in somebody's office
I'll talk but you won't listen to me
I know your answer already
I know your answer already
I know your answer already

And yet, one more... Tracy Chapman.. another beautiful accompanied with acoustic guitar..... Tracy's voice is haunting..

Tracy Chapman
Title: Behind The Wall
Album: Tracy Chapman

[SPONSOR]

Last night I heard the screaming
Loud voices behind the wall
Another sleepless night for me
It won't do no good to call
The police Always come late
If they come at all

And when they arrive
They say they can't interfere
With domestic affairs
Between a man and his wife
And as they walk out the door
The tears well up in her eyes

Last night I heard the screaming
Then a silence that chilled my soul
I prayed that I was dreaming
When I saw the ambulance in the road
And the policeman said
"I'm here to keep the peace
Will the crowd disperse
I think we all clould use some sleep

I can't leave tonight without posting what I would consider the grandaddy of all depressing songs...

Fire and Rain.. James Taylor (I have read accounts that due to the circumstances of this song, James Taylor was put in a mental institution... how true it is, I'm not sure...)

Fire And Rain"
James Taylor

Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now

Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now
