We have always gone spring break or June to Disney. We are considering a trip the first of October this year. We love Beach Club for the proximity to Epcot and the pool area. We also love Grand Floridian for its beauty, and we enjoyed Wilderness Lodge too. However, since we haven't been in October before, what are your thoughts on resorts during this time? Are there a lot of harvest decorations around the resorts? I didn't know how important the pools are at this time of year?
So, what are your favorites for this time of year and why?

October trips for us means Food & Wine! An EPCOT resort is the way to go if you are planning on going to F&W multiple times.

It's so nice to be able to walk to and from EPCOT so quickly, especially during Oct crowds. In our experience WS at EPCOT is busier during F&W than it is in June! Beating those crowds, no buses and a quick trip makes an EPCOT resort an easy decision.

I assume you intend to book cash? You're very late if you plan to book DVC for October at BCV or VGF.

Keep in mind that last October had numerous days over 80 degrees, so pools mattered. It also had a property-wide shutdown for Hurricane Matthew.

October = Food and Wine at Epcot = Epcot area resort. We love getting Park Hoppers when we stay near Epcot in October (the majority of my trips in the past five years), because we love 'snacking around the world' during F&W even on days when we spend the bulk of our time at another park.

Plus, if you like SAB, October is usually a great time to be there. The pool is not nearly as crowded during the day as it is in summer, plus the weather is usually warm (and sunny) enough for serious pool time. Granted, my October trips tend to be Sunday - Saturday, with our resort time at pools spent Monday through Thursday, so weekends might be busier. AND, Octobers have gotten busier in recent years (thus our switch to the first week of December this year, which was great in regards to crowd size)...but something to consider.

I really like the hallow-wishes fireworks and seeing them from the room is important for us since we have a little one who needs sleep. Also, we don't spend more than a day at food and wine, so that has little appeal for us.

Food and Wine is great but if yore looking for a resort that has harvest decor you wont find much at any of the resorts. If you want to feel festive I would say your best bet is a MK resort. You can watch/hear hallowishes from your resort! The most "themes" resort for that time is probably fort wilderness. Not sure about early October but I know closer to Halloween lots of campers decorate their site for a Halloween decoration contest. They also do hayrides there I believe.
