What are some of the books that you loved as a child, or love reading to your own children/grandchildren?

My son is only 3 months old but I love to read out loud (I'm a high school teacher but should have been an elementary school teacher, instead!) and I'm already acquiring quite a collection of books.

Help me add to my stash? What books do you love and why?

For babies I love Sandra Boynton!!! especially Barnyard Dance.

Other favs:
Guess how much I love you
Owen
the Rainbow fish
If you give a mouse a cookie and Dr Seuss's ABC book
Books by Audrey and Don Wood: Piggys and Napping House (Awesome illustrations!)

For me growing up
I loved Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Charlie and the glass elevator, matilda
As well as LM Montomery's Anne of Green Gables (still one of my 2 favorite books, along with Pride and Prejudice)
And the Little House Books

I still love books, must be why I work in a library:)

I have lots of favorites.

Here are a few... the very Hungry Caterpillar, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, If you give a mouse a Cookie (the series of all these), Brown Bear Brown Bear, Alexander & the Terrible Horrible No good very bad day, Click Clack Moo, Cows that type (there are several by this author), Corduroy.

We always had a weakness for Mercer Mayer books, especially all the Little Critter ones. Also loved several of Sandra Boynton's, the Franklin ones, and I can't even remember what else! We always did a LOT of reading.

Goodnight Moon....Going on a Bear Hunt...Tumble Bumble....Ten Little Monkeys...Ten Little Fish...Little Quack...we have alot of favorites around here!

Thanks for the suggestions so far - there are quite a few there that I've never heard of!

DS already enjoys Sandra Boynton - he coos along with me when I read her books to him! He also has a thing for One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, but it's awfully long for a baby. We normally only get through a few pages at a time. :goodvibes

Apparently rhyming is awesome at his age. :thumbsup2

Books by Sandra Boyton for the little ones.

Another favorite was Tumble, Bumble.

We also loved How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight by Jane Yolen. This had to be my favorite to read to my kids at bedtime as well as Tumble, Bumble. My older children sometimes still read these two.

Mercy Watson series written by Kate DiCamillo The stories are so cute and the illustrations are beautiful. These are not books for babies but for young children.

Favorites at our house:

Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do You See - Eric Carle (actually we love a lot of his books)
Little Quack, Little Quack Bedtime, Little Quack and the New Friend, and there is a fourth, it's title escapes me right now
That's Not My Monster - Usborne books (Most Usborne books are great)
Any of the touch and feel kind of books are great too.

These are just a few. There are so many great kid books out there! Have fun!

All of the Eric Carle books were loved by me and dd. Also, Little Brown Bear and Franklin books, the Berenstain Bears and Dr Suess

DD14 absolutely loved the Little Critter books when she was little (Just Grandma and Me was her fav.). Also, Dr. Seuss, Little Bear and Courderoy.

DS9 loved Goodnight Moon, Franklin, Arthur, The Froggy series, The Hungry Catepillar and Curious George(his fav.)

I had trouble with reading while I was growing up. I had a hard time comprehending what I read. So I remember that I didn't read much as a child.

And this isn't really for babies but I do remember reading this book all the time while I was a child and I think it's just a classic. "Where the s
Sidewalk Ends". I would read this book over and over again.

When my boys were little I had a couple of huge Disney books that had a ton of stories in them. They liked those a lot. Also had the whole collection of the Clifford books, Dr. Suess books, Franklin, etc. I guess if it was a cartoon of some sort, they loved the books.

Anything Kevin Henkes (Owen, Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, etc.)

Our kids LOVED the Shel Sylverstein books too (Where the Sidewalk Ends, etc). These are great for babies as they are short poems and a lot of rhyming :thumbsup2
