I thought it would be fun to start a new thread of your favorite place(s) to camp--excluding Ft Wilderness! ;) If it has a website, include it. We may camp in VA or NC in April, so I'd love to hear about any places there.

For any of you who ever are in the Northern New York area, our new favorite (aside from FW of course) is in Henderson Harbor near Watertown, NY. Association Island RV Resort. Here is the link:

Bichon Barb -

That place looks beautiful. I grew up on Lake Erie. I just love western/northern NY and of course Southern Ontario. We live in central NC now.

We just returned for week at Ft.W cabin for the first time. It was fun and the kids loved it. We will definitely be back.

Our 1st time camping was in June 1998, my husband surprised us by renting an RV (32ft). We had no idea where to go, but after asking around and researching - had a whole 24hrs to search, we went to Fonatana Villiage in western NC. It was 5hr from home. It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. The campground is small, some tent sites, some partial hookups and some full hookups. The campground is located at the base of Fontana dam, along a small river with a mountain backdrop. It is truly a place I will never forget.

The Fontana Village has many types of cabins to rent and family activities. We were there for such a short time. We did rent a pontoon boat and go out on the lake one day. I hope to be able to return there again.

Here is the web-site

Great thread!

Monte Sano Mountain State Park in Huntsville, AL is really nice. Partial Hookup Gravel Sites, and a dumping station, with a a few pull-throughs, some decent shower facilities, and a large Wilderness Area with about 20 primitive sites . I think there might even be small laundromat at the general store.

Each water/electric site has a picnic table and a grill.

The primitive sites are within easy walking distance to water and the shower facilities, and have a fire pit at each.

They also have some cabins to rent.

Lots of walking trails, an observatory, a family picnic area, an ampitheater, and they are rebuilding an old burnt out tavern into a restaurant.

our favorite campgrounds: (besides the fort)

In the pocono mts of PA: otter lake www.otterlake.com. very nice wooded sites, indoor and out door pools, large stocked lake with boat rentals. very close to Bushkill falls.

In the washington DC area: cherry hill RV park www.cherryhillpark.com. very clean. nice sites, (not very wooded or shaded, but exceptionally clean and well kept.) great pool, local bus stops at park and takes you directly to Metro station. (the only way to get around DC, don't even think of driving there!)

In Ocean City MD, upper VA area: Frontier town www.frontiertown.com. Wild West show, great atmosphere, waterpark in campground. (the kids LOVE this one!!!)

Besides FW of course, we like this campground in Rehoboth Beach DE. It is really nice and close to the ocean. 3 seasons RV Resort

There is also a really nice KOA we go to here in Michigan in Port Huron. They have lots to do like go carts, surrey bike rental, bank ball, mini golf, bumper boats, old west town, and lots of planned activities, as well as a pool and game room.

That's all I can think of right now.

clkelley, we used to live a few minutes away from Monte Sano, it is a beautiful place, I still have family in Huntsville.

He-he. I'm glad I started this thread, 'cause I'm getting some great info! Thanks guys. We talked about going to Cape Cod for a week next summer, but I had mentioned to DH, we should also look into some of the other ocean states near us, i.e. CT and RI, so this is great. Also, the Poconos are only a few hours from here.

Regretably, I can't remember the name of this campground, but it was near Santa Cruz, California in the coastal redwoods. There was a steam train ride nearby. We used to go here often when I was stationed in CA in the Army, and it was our first camping experience as a young family. Many happy memories.

:D

I'll second Douthat State Park in VA and also add First Landing State Park in VA Beach. We also liked Cape Henlopen, DE (just north of Ocean City, MD) and we lucked out this year with fabulous weather and NO bugs at Assateague Island, MD (just south of O.C., MD and down the road from Frontiertown). If you ever find yourself in West Virginia, there is Big Bend (not sure if it is State or National Park) where we are headed to tomorrow. I have also heard great things about Hungry Mother State Park in Southwestern VA. Happy Camping!

Speaking of VA...

We drove to Williamsburg April of last year. My sister and her family drove up from Atlanta to meet us. When we got to the campground, my sister was already there. I told her I was disappointed that the sites were so close together. She just started laughing and said "Oh yeah, well just wait." A minute later a freight train came roaring by -- maybe about 30 feet from our camps. Our whole pop up shook! We were rudely awakened about four times that night.

Needless to say, the next morning we cancelled the rest of our reservation and got the heck out of there. (I didn't know it was possible to take down a pop up that quick. LOL.) The people were really nice about it, and I felt bad. It really was a cute place with nice landscaping, but with two wild little boys, I was really worried. That was Anvil Camprground. We moved to the Williamsburg KOA and had a great time--except for the diamond back rattler--but that's another story...

Having left Williamsburg early 2 weeks ago I found the last post amusing. Thanks to the other posters for their favorites, I wish I had know all this before we went.
I hate to slam any campground but we cut our Williamsburg trip in half because of the poor campground we chose. We stayed at the James river campground and absolutely hated it. It is an old, poorly maintained facility with some very surly employees.
The area offers a wealth of things to do but we just cringed at the end of the day when we had to go back and lock ourselves in our camper.
