I obviously won't be at where I was before when I start training for the January Half due to surgery. For my Half I ran last March I ran the whole way (OK, with the exception of at the end when my leg gave out, but that is another story... :lmao: ), so I'm gonna need to use a different training program this time. I really think I'm gonna have to do a walk/run program instead. Can anyone recommend any programs? Galloway, Bingham...??? I got the go ahead to start walking a mile the other day... I'm hoping by September I will be able to officially start a program. I ran into some complications with my surgery so I'm not gonna be able to push myself quite like I thought. Thanks for any help! :grouphug:

I know this probably isn't something you might want to hear, but you can walk a half. My first half I did in 3hours 17min at WDW. My time is a bit quicker now, but it can be done, so I just wanted to give you some hope that if the running thing is a bit tough after your surgery you can do it walking. Also if you learn a basic racewalking technique and use that as your walking segment, it will help your time. A good racewalking technique even if it isn't that fast can help a person who runs/walks.

Good luck!!

I don't want to come across too much as a Galloway cheerleader, but this is my second year in our local Galloway running group, and I have nothing but good things to say about the program. I really like the run/walk intervals, and I find that I'm faster doing intervals than when I try to run.

If you have any specific questions, PM me! (I also have an extra copy of his Marathon book that I'd be willing to loan.)

Thanks Tracy and Jackie. I'll go look into Galloway. I'm in the Atlanta area and he has several groups here...

I would second the idea that you might try racewalking as you are recovering. There is an ongoing thread hear for walkers where you might get some additional support. You would be amazed how racewalking will keep you in shape until you can begin your running once more. The technique uses a different muscle emphasis and you will notice that. Best WISHes with your recovery.

There is also a walk/run and run/walk plan in the back of Marathoning for Mortals. I think that is the one I'm going to try this year.

Shan, let us know how it goes for you if you do join up with a Galloway group there. I'd be interested in hearing.
