Fastpasses?

It's been over 10 years since we visited Disneyland. We are visiting in about a month. It's also been several years since we used traditional Fastpasses at Disney World. Can you give me some tips on using Fastpasses? Which attractions should we use them for? Are you only able to have one at a time? Are there any that are likely to run out? Many rides or attractions that don't offer them? Any information you can give would be appreciated :)

The DLR Fastpass Encyclopedia is a good place to start.

There are a few caveats/changes since the first post was last updated, primarily in terms of which FPs are connected/disconnected. All attraction FPs are now connected to their respective park's FP system. The nighttime show FPs (F! and WoC), character meet & greet FPs (A&E and Olaf), and Frozen at Princess Fantasy Faire are disconnected FPs, meaning you can get one of those without impacting your ability to get an attraction FP. Now there have been some recent reports indicating that Olaf may no longer be using the FP system consistently. The Frozen Sing Along (in DCA) was using the FP system (and it was connected to the rest of DCA), but there was one recent reporting indicating that it might also not be using the FP system consistently. So it's something to check on when you get closer to your trip date.

In terms of the attractions that use the FP system at DLR, it's not that many. You can see a list of all of the attractions that may use the FP system on the Disneyland.com website. The current DLR FP system operates very much like the traditional/legacy FP system used to work at WDW. As noted in the Encyclopedia, they are enforcing return times, so you should plan on returning during the window printed on the FP. Unlike WDW which had a fairly consistent grace period (15 minutes), DLR does not have a consistent grace period. So if you're late, you may get a sympathetic CM or you may not.

Another big difference between the DLR and WDW legacy FP system is that once your park ticket has been used in one park, it can be used to get FPs in both parks. So let's say you start your day in DL, but want to ride RSR at some point. You can send one person over to DCA to get the RSR FPs, while everyone else remains in DL. You have to use the ticket to enter a park that day for this to work, but once you've entered DL or DCA you can get FPs in both DL and DCA.

As noted, F! (in DL) and WoC (in DCA) both use the FP system, but they are disconnected meaning you can get a FP for F! and/or WoC and it doesn't impact your ability to get an attraction FP. The distribute the F! FPs along Big Thunder Trail in DL and the WoC FPs are distributed at GRR in DCA. If there are two shows that evening, they distribute the FPs for the first show first, then the second show. So if you want a FP for the second show, you have to guestimate when they'll start distributing them.

Most of the rides have FP machines near the entrance. There are only a few with FPs machines that aren't located close to the entrance. Most attraction FPs are located very near to the main entrance to the attraction.
  • Star Tours is across the walkway between the entrance to Buzz and the Little Green Command Store.
  • Haunted Mansion is located a bit set-back from the entrance, close to where the train is when there is a train in the train station.
  • ToT is across the "street" near the Red Car Trolley station.
  • Splash is by the Brier Patch store, across from the entrance to the Hungry Bear.
  • RSR is the most removed, being near the entrance to It's Tough to Be a Bug.

...so your 7 days out and there has not been much chatter on whether the week before or week after is going to be hit hard. So with that in mind, plan your days in particular lands, ROA has three Fastpass attractions in addition to three more E attractions. you wuld be best to plan your day around one land and use Fast Pass to your advantage. Skipping around in your week choice to Tomorrowland may just be totally frustrating

We were a Disneyland in April. I knew here were not " a lot" of fastpass machines, but I was shocked to see so may locked up/not in use. Found out many were broken. Don't think the Haunted Mansion ever got fixed while there. I will advice to get your fastpasses for Cars Land as soon as park opens. Runs out and runs out FAST! Got a fastpass early morning for a 10 p.m. return. When we got there, the fastpass return rounded the street corner!

I don't know if it was broken, but Haunted Mansion generally rarely used their FP system outside of when Haunted Mansion Holiday was running. HM's system has been in use lately, since they debuted the new Hatbox Ghost, but before that it generally isn't in use outside of the September to December time frame (and even then it wasn't always used).

In terms of RSR, that is the most popular FP at DLR. It tends to last for the first few hours of the day, but it will run out. So if you know you want to ride RSR using a FP, I would make a point of getting one within the first 90 minutes of the day (although, how long they last seems to vary from day-to-day, with some days lasting for three to four hours after opening). It's worth noting that if RSR is closed (doesn't open with the park or goes down at some point), they suspend issuing FPs for as long as the attraction is down.

I can tell you that on Tuesday, the Big Thunder FPs were only about 45-60 minutes out for return time all day and evening, so a great one to grab and then go do something else in New Orleans Square or Critter Country and return.
It's easy to get a FP for Star Tours on your way to Space Mountain early in the day, which will have a fairly short return window after doing a few other Tomorrowland things.
In DCA, I like to go to Radiator Springs Racers right away (if it's running first thing, not a guarantee), then get a FP for Soarin, do TSM (no FP), Screamin, a few smaller Paradise Pier things, and then work my way back to Soarin, perhaps claiming a WoC and/or Grizzly River Run FP on my way back if the times are favorable.

You can probably tell I like to group my FPs to avoid too much criss-crossing. It gets harder later in the day, but if you get there early you can do so much before it gets hot and crowded.
