I thought one could make fastpass+ selections with a resort reservation for the entire party but this is not so? There are three listed adults in the room one currently has a ticket (room only res) I can make fastpass+ for ticket holder only. Others are getting tickets later cannot have fastpass+ with just reservation. I suppose it makes sense but, if they buy tickets at the gate, then the party cannot travel through the parks together.

Yes each person needs a ticket to make FP reservations. It makes sense really or you could have people pre booking tons of dates they may never use. Is there a reason they don't want to buy the tickets in advance?

You can only make FP+ reservations for people who are linked to your MDE account through the Friends and Family section, AND who have valid ticket admissions linked to their profiles.

Depending on who you're traveling with, you need to get that set up first. Link all of the accounts. If you're traveling with another family with children, you can link with an adult from that party, make FP+ reservations for that adult then they can copy the reservations to the children on their MDE account.

If your other party members are buying tickets at the gate, then yes, you will be at a disadvantage because they will not be able to pre-book FP+. They will have to wait in line at an in-park kiosk to make their FP+ reservations.

Some folks do not like to spend the money in advance. I think this makes grand gathering days grand separated from each other in the park days.

I suspect that part of Disney's reasoning in designing FastPass+ was to capture ticket money earlier. I'm sure they saw that many visitors who were not buying package plans were waiting until they arrived onsite to get their tickets.

Now, with FastPass+, visitors will be highly motivated to spend that ticket money at least 60 days in advance. And Disney gets to hold the money longer, which, when you're talking about amounts with lots of zeroes, adds up to quite a bit more revenue.

Exactly. The faster they can get the money out of you, the better for them.

If 2 of you wait to get tickets at the park then they will have to go to one of the kiosks and try to get FP+ times (if available) to match the one that had the advance FP+s.

Make sure they are set up in MDE and linked to you in advance. As soon as they get their tickets have them link them in MDE. Log in to your MDE and copy your FP+ reservations to them (subject to availability) and yo will all be able to tour together without having to go to the kiosks.
